There are many ways to let google know that you have new content on your website. You can
  • create and submit a dynamic sitemap which change after each update
  • Set revisit frequency in your site header or using sitemap configuration
  • ping your blog to popular services
  • Have a link to your post on a page beeing crawled by Google bot, on social networks by example
  • ...

You can use the free indexers and pingers to send signals to Google. That helps a lot.

Once you update new content or add new pages google index it atomatically. Just set sitmap first.

I also want to know what happens when you upload new content to the site. My understanding is the automatic checking of your sitemap when the search engine comes to your site for a possible inclusion to the search list. Or perhaps the crawlers are onto the site once in a while to get the status of the last update to the site. When that happens the new content is noted by the search engine.
