What Google counts is the number and quality of things that they can see. Your twitter account does have PR and authority. If "enough" quality tweeters tweet a page, that's a plus to Google.

Since Facebook is gated behind login's and scripts, it makes it more difficult to find, so twitter will always beat out Facebook in terms of gaining rank ups in Google.

If you share your website link on your facebook and twitter profile, this will be considered backlinks. However, if you share links as yout facebook and twitter posts, these links are not counted as backlinks. Having said that, if your posts on facebook and twitter get likes this will be valued as social signals by search engines Generating Social signals is counted as one of the important off page SEO strategy.

I have read in a couple of discussions about social signals which is now the contemporary of backlinks and bookmarking methods. When you post your website’s link in Facebook or you tweet about it in Twitter then those posts are considered backlinks by the search engines. I think that consideration was effected just recently because old discussions say that social signals are not considered by search engines yet.

Thank you, both shellibagley and vinaya. It's not my question but I appreciate these answers.

If you share your website link via Facebook or Twitter is it a "dofollow" or a "nofollow" link? (Hope this isn't a stupid question.)

Generally speaking, profile links are dofollow links. Links in the posts are no follow. However, some website owners disable dofollow attribute in their website and the profile link will remain no follow. Links on your twitter and facebook posts are nofollow and if you use website link on your profile page, they are dofollow.

I have seen several discussions that say social signals are now accepted as backlinks. When you post your website’s link in Facebook and Twitter that will be considered as backlink by the search engines. Unlike before when the understanding was that posts in social media are ignored by search engines, now they will work for you. That may be the reason why Facebook is now being deluged with posts about links of websites.
