One word: Perseverance. In my opinion and experience, this is the most important factor for any successful freelance career.
If you are a complete beginner with few things to offer, it going to take a LONG time to cash in some serious profit. You need to gain both professional experiences but also long-term clients that pay well, both are hard to acquire and can actually take years to accomplish.
If you already are a highly skilled professional, it can be a little bit easier, but finding the right clients can be equally challenging. I personally abandoned my full-time freelance career 5-6 year ago. Because I'm still doing some part-time freelancing and I already have the experience but also some connections that can get me, clients, I can easily switch to full-time freelancing. The only problem would be the fact that I would need about 1 year to reach a decent enough income.
