When it comes to online marketing tactics, there are 5 that need to be banished off the face of this earth.  99.9% of people hate annoying marketing tactics and the 0.01% who don't are the ones using them lol.  It takes a lot of work, and money, to get people to your website so try not to take advantage of them with schemey and shady marketing tactics that rarely work anyway.  You will just be devaluing yourself and your website at the same time.  Sure, they might work every once in a while, and you could have a great passive income because of it, but you would make much more if you did things that weren't annoying.

Creating an annoying experience on your website will always get people to click off of your website.  This has been tested many times and I even do it myself.  I will get annoying pop ups and even some call to actions shoved in my face which will annoy me and I will close the tab immediately.  We are going to websites because we are interested in something, not because we want to be annoyed with 3,600 ads, pop ups, content lockers, etc.

Here are the top 5 online marketing tactics that need to be banished immediately



1. Anything That Is Interrupting
Whenever we go to a website, we go because we were intrigued about something, right?  What if you go to the website and there was immediately a pop up or slide out that was asking for your name, email, phone number, address, etc.  You would likely be annoyed.  Now there is a right and wrong time for this, and having it show up as soon as a person gets to your website is the WRONG time lol.

If you're investing in a lot of PPC traffic, you will notice one of two outcomes when it comes to annoying pop ups.  You will either get a conversion or you will have a high bounce rate.  You'll likely get both because the people who have good ad blocker won't see a lot of the crap showing up which interrupts most peoples experience lol.

Not all pop ups are created equal.  The only time I will have something pop up for a visitor is when they begin to leave.  If a script on my website notices they are going to the address bar, a pop up will come on screen offering them a discount or something that entices them to stay on the page.  This helps increase my conversions and isn't annoying people while they are on my websites Top 4 online marketing tactics that need to be banished


2. Ignoring the CAN-SPAM Act by purchasing email lists and spamming them.
Now I get hundreds of emails every day through all of my websites combined.  I will immediately spam whatever I didn't sign up for because I don't want it to get out of control and eventually I'm getting 1,000's of emails every day. 

Now I can't hate on this all the way because I've scraped plenty of emails from databases and around the web in order to email potential clients.  But I won't spam 1,000,000 emails a day with bland advertisements.  I will go through them one by one and figure out what people need for their websites and then I will customize each email so they know it's not spam.  Sure, some people will spam my emails, but the amount of emails I get through by personalizing emails trumps the few spams.


3. Content Lockers
Content lockers use to be a great way to increase your profits.  You will basically have loads of content on your website that will rank for some keywords and pull in traffic.  You will allow them to read the first paragraph, but as soon as the user scrolls down to a certain point, the content becomes locked and the user has to sign up for some crappy offer in order to keep reading the page.

This is just annoying because people come into a website wanting to read something, and then it's locked away until they basically pay for something.  Google has started catching onto this type of thing and will devalue these sites into oblivion soon enough lol. 

Whenever I would run into one of these types of websites I would just search for the titles through Google and find a different website that would allow me to read for free.  I wouldn't have to complete some random offer that would just spam me for years to come in order to read a little more content.


4. Webinars that are "live" but obviously pre-recorded
Webinars are becoming more and more popular, and that means there are going to be more and more people trying to cut corners.  Sure, if you had scheduling problems and couldn't do a live webinar, people will understand.  You just need to send out an email to let people know that your webinar won't be happening and why it isn't.  They will usually understand and come back the next time you're going live.

If you're publishing pre-recorded webinars and saying they're live, you're only ruining your authority and looking scammy at the same time.  If you're doing a live webinar, make it live and not pre-recorded!

Agree. If it were not annoying browsers wouldn't have that Option that allows you to block pop ups, etc.

  • But don't you think it's OK if those “interruptions” appear when a person is leaving the site? Or would that make them feel trapped as if they can't leave?

3. Content Lockers
Content lockers? Oh! There's a name for it! (O.o)

4. Webinars that are "live" but obviously pre-recorded
Like going to see a live performance and the artist is lip-syncing. If your throat is sore or you have laryngitis, just tell us. We're your fans. We love you!

I'm OK with webinars whether live or pre-recorded. But that's jive to say they're live when you know they are pre-recorded.

God, yes. Please banish the content-locker. I don't know why but I keep seeing more websites adding these. Just the other day, I was looking for some SEO information about backlinks and two different sites that I clicked on, BOTH had the content-lockers enabled. I was beyond annoyed after, haha. I just closed the whole browser down.

I really agree with you that certain marketing methods should simply not be used because they will negatively impact your website. Avoid them at all costs.

I have to agree. There is nothing more annoying than content lockers and I just close the website straight away if I come across one. I don't see why they can't just show the content because if it is extremely good then I am much more likely to stay on the website and I will probably read a lot more articles on that website. But the moment I see a content locker, the website is losing a potential loyal reader.

Well, I agree with most of what you said, except content locking, though it can be very annoying and fustrating, especially when you're looking for some information and you find out, it's locked.
But it's a very good strategy in online marketing . Because it's benefits can not be overemphasized.
Content locking can bring in a lot of money if used properly. If you are thinking about using a content locker, put your self in he place of your visitor and decide weather or not the risk of loosing potential customers is worth the gain of increasing your CPA leads.
Content lockers are also good to use for creating email lists. If you have an active visitor base, you may want to consider using a content locker to build your email list. Give them some incentive to leave their email. Either a free gift, a service or access to the “top secret” page.

I agree with all the points you have stated because I also find them annoying and at this point obsolete methods. However, I honestly cannot blame the people who do this because monetizing content can be very difficult. You are right though, in that if viewers of the site are turned off by the tactics a lot of the time they can just as easily search for an alternate site. I am looking forward to seeing what the evolution of these old tactics will be in the future.

So far, the pop up ad is the most annoying to me. Whether it is in the beginning of access or upon exiting the site, I don't think I will come back again. I am lucky not to experience that locking of the page to force me to register for definitely I will not register even if the sight looks good. In genersl, a site that has sly tricks for its ads look cheap to me and does not deserve my time.

Very annoying tips certainly.Nothing is more annoying than the pop-up and bogus ads.In fact you get to a site and you begin to wonder if it a paid to click site, too much ads banners and links.

I think interruption marketing will never go. The reason being if something has to be noticed then it has to interrupt your current flow of thought. And that's how things can be promoted. Be it a thought, product or the marketed products. That's how you can see it is possible in many ways. I can tell you that in some cases marketing stuff online is going to be harder.

I had a good giggle regarding the webinar being live. I subscribed to one, watched most of it and recommended to a friend. The following webinar she watched was exactly the same (wording, clothes, "welcome Jack whose just joined us.....". It was free, so never complained, but certainly not live and due to that I would never visit that website again.

    I agree with the first one. I experience it a lot in Facebook videos where an ad probably longer than the actual video. Rather than being attracted to the product being advertised, I just end up being annoyed where sometimes I just choose to not watch the video.

    Thankfully I have never used any of these marketing tactics. When I see a pop up on a website I am visiting, I immediately leave the site even if the site might have the information I am looking for. I always thing that most of the people do the same, therefore, I don't use pop up. When I see a content locked, I never sign up to offers of pay money to access that content. Unless the content is a course material for my online class, I never go for that content. I always see my readers on my shoes. Therefore, I don't lock my contents.

    You have mentioned the 2 most hated style of a website – pop up and locked content. But I know that those sites are just trying to earn their keep by getting regular traffic. It is a big hassle when you enter a site and you are asked to register before you can see the contents. With the pop up, I would endure it the first time but when another pop up ads appear then I would have to exit. That is how short my patience is.
