What are your FAVORITE and LEAST FAVORITE things about Freelancing?

Many of you here in Community Discussion freelance part time, and several of you have taken it all the way to full time. Some of you work for yourselves, and some of you even have employees.

There are upsides and downside to everything. What makes you LOVE this gig, and what makes you dislike it sometimes?

1. What's your favorite thing about freelancing?
Do you prefer the independence of being your own boss? Do you love the challenge, the ability to choose your own hours, working at home..? What's the number one thing that you truly enjoy about this, that keeps you on the path?

2. What's your least favorite thing about freelancing?
Do you get stressed out, have some awful clients, have no social life, not make enough money..? What are the biggest bummers, and are there ways to overcome them?

The money! There are other reasons too like freedom and independence and not having to work for someone else. Not having to "go into the office" and have "a talk" for being 10 seconds late. Not having to travel in the rat race to and from work. Not being stuck in a deadly boring job that isn't going anywhere or doing anything for my future. But at the end of the day, the money you can make freelancing can be double even triple what your fixed income and salary was/is. Sometimes even more. The sky is the limit when it comes to freelancing.
2. What's your least favorite thing about freelancing?

The money again. There's no guarantee that one week will be better than the last. Especially starting out. Although after a while if you have a lot of regular clients and are established and getting new clients it's not so bad. But dealing with awkward clients that make unreasonable demands and those that are malicious and leave you a bad rating even though you've still gone the extra mile for them and done everything for them as advertised in your service description and given them a blinding good service but they still leave a negative rating and are unwilling to listen to you and change it just because they're petty in some way are one of the negative aspects of it.

Although that is extremely rare and I can't actually say that's happened to me much. In fact that's only happened once and I've hundreds of clients and I keep them informed at every step. Like telling them I've nearly finished before I deliver and asking them if they have any questions about anything. The only other thing is the long hours as sometimes you can be on your computer for 18+ hours working away to complete clients orders.

But generally speaking, the positives far outweigh any negative aspects of it. What are your FAVORITE and LEAST FAVORITE things about Freelancing?

LOL Mike

Yes it is funny how the best thing can at the same time be the worst thing too!

I agree with you that the positives far outweigh the negatives.

I like what you said about having to have "a talk"... if I had to be employed in a 9-5 now I can promise you that I would be fired in less than 24 hours for being a cheeky, rude little shit but I would never be able to do the ass kissing that goes with working for a boss now.

My favorite thing about freelancing is FREEDOM. When i can choose time to work, time off, set my own prices. I don't like bosses, specially those with less knowledge then me or specially when they want to be bossy just to look like someone over me... I work much longer hours then if i do 9-5 work, but i feel very good like that because that freedom motivates me.
Least favorite thing about freelancing is that we can't always predict our future income, so we have to be careful with our expenses. And i don't like to deal with fraudulent buyers, but that's all part of job we doing and we have to deal with it.

What I love best is the fact that I can set my own working hours according to how much work I have at the moment, and also according to my other obligations such as parenting.

What I do not like is those periods when it seems that there is almost no work available, or on the other extreme, too much work. There are times when it seems everybody wants to order at the same time, and I end up too busy and even having to refuse orders. I also hate people who try to rip you off.

Hi bobjoehax3 thanks for your question. Of course I am a freelancer because of I love to do freedom work. And I always try to do something different and different unique. I never try to do 9-5 job. When I was student I always think to do business rather any type of job and by that concern I always try to find out any of business which something different or unique. And I got that way on 2007-08 when I start work as freelancer. Really freelancing career such a great career, where I feel freedom and something different and unique.

1. What's your favorite thing about freelancing?

I love making people happy, but the ability of making so much money! In my "First" sales week I topped out of $200, I'm too young to have a job so this is a great way for me to provide high quality services and make money. I can also have a flexible schedule and hang out with friends and get to it later.

2. What's your least favorite thing about freelancing?

I can stressed out when I have tons of orders in progress because then I have to get to work and get everything done and with High quality. Deadlines are also quite stressful and drive me crazy!

Yeah! That's true. I love getting good feedback and recommendations from my buyers and clients! But while having a lot of orders is a good thing because it means you're making and earning money in a legit way, it can also get a bit stressful and time consuming at times as well. That's why I posted 10 questions to ask yourself before becoming a freelancer the other day. Posing such questions as are you ready to work outside of your comfort zone and are you ready to give up your day and night for your career? Because sometimes as a freelancer you might have to and will be working 18+ hours on the PC slogging away working on peoples orders trying to devote time to each one so they are all being worked on at once and managing them like that can get stressful and you can get burned out if you're not cut out for it and up for all of that and it's why some people quit doing it too! But those that don't usually enjoy much more benefits than those that do later on down the line.

Here's the rest in case you feel like learning truly whether freelancing is for you or not. What are your FAVORITE and LEAST FAVORITE things about Freelancing?

Question 1: Is Freelancing The Right Choice For Me?
Question 2: Are You Happy to Leave Your Comfort Zone Working as a Freelancer?
Question 3: Should You Quit Your Day Job to Become a Freelancer?
Question 4: Can You Afford to Be The Freelancer You Want to Be?
Question 5: Do You Have The Skills or Abilities You Need to Be a Freelancer?
Question 6: Do You Have Adequate Experience to Become a Freelancer?
Question 7: How Much Money Can I Make Freelancing?
Question 8: How Will I Find and Get New Clients and Work?
Question 9 How to Manage All Your Clients?
Question 10: Do You Have a Back up Plan in Place?

This was an extremely insightful and well thought out series of posts, Mike.. Thanks for doing that. I think it'll really help a lot of new folks in the biz!

Thanks Bobjoe. You're welcome. That's why I put it together so that people who are thinking about getting into freelancing can know about all the ins and outs, the pros and cons, the ups and downs etc etc to freelancing to see whether or not it's for them. So many people jump in to the deep end of freelancing and then find out that it's not for them. So asking these questions first and seeing what the answers to them could be will let you know whether it's for you or not. ;)

I love the freedom of freelancing, because I can work from anywhere in anytime, and that’s the best thing in freelancing.
What's your least favorite thing about freelancing?

Least thing about freelancing is when someone is trying to scam you. And as any other job freelancing has its own ,but I admit there are some moments that I’m stressed out by some buyers that choose to play dumb.As a freelancer i can say that my social life and money are very good so far.

1. What's your favorite thing about freelancing?

The fact that you can work in your PJs and you are your own boss, mostly.

2. What's your least favorite thing about freelancing?

The monotony if it all. The lack of human interaction can really bother me on the long run. I'm not that extrovert of a person but I still feel the need to interact with someone in my own domain, like real, face-to-face interaction.
Also being alone all the time can make you lazy and you don't learn much overall by yourself. This means acquiring new skills is pretty slow.

I think the issue of not having enough time to spend with friends is the biggest challenge that I've had with freelancing for it has limited the number of time I have for friends.

The best thing I like about freelancing is I can work at any time, any place and there is no one to dictate me. The worst thing about freelancing is it is really hard to find a good paying assignments. Most of the time clients want you to work for a low payment. You have to work for a small money or refuse the job. You cannot refuse if you badly want money.

The same for me, the hardest is in finding better ways to earn. Sites that pay are now getting frugal so freelancers are competing for just a few crumbs. But the advantage is the work hours when I am at home. It's just like resting in front of the computer. And although I have very little effort in thinking what to write, I am able to come up with quality output maybe because it is my forte.

My favorite thing about freelancing is the flexibility. I like that I can control how I earn and there is also guarantee that I will earn more if I do much. I can't complain about earnings since I don't live under my own roof but I would like to earn more and be able to pay my own rent and invest too.

What I don't like is that there is no consistent work and that makes it hard to depend on it fully even if I want to.
