Small sites cannot compete with big brands?

If you have a small site and you are competing with a big brand (IE: Wikipedia, Amazon, etc), can you ever out rank them or get search results? Is it worth the time?

Google says "no, you can't" so does that mean we should all quit in this niche?

You can compete with everyone if you have enough resources - Money + skills. Wikipedia is a pain in the ass for PPC websites and Amazon for affiliate websites, but that's how it goes.

No, in my opinion you should never just quit a website because there is a bigger more well known competitor. Almost every niche you can think of will have a big brand in there on way or another and if we all just gave up through fear of the opposition, then there would be a lot less good websites around on the net.

PS: You don't have to beat your no.1 competitor to earn cash and do well, most niches have room for more than one big name, and remember, those big names, weren't always big, so whos to say that if you stick with it, you wont get there one day.

Give a unique and entertaining voice to the material your write for your site and you will earn your own share of readers, even against competition from more 'authoritative' encyclopedic style wiki site.

Google has chosen sides on what they consider an authority site and it's usually going to be Wiki or Amazon or other similar (multi billion dollar site). And, you won't have a hope of displacing those sites. Then again, maybe those sites will always do a better job of providing content than the average small time blogger.

Just do your very best and give your audience what they want. Cultivate your own niche, don't get discouraged if you are not number one as 99% of the other bloggers out there are in the same situation.

I think if you are in top 3 to 5 of results you have done a great job.

Thanks

You make a site big brand or not! Everyone started as small sites; you can turn your site into big brand too! But it is real to think that it is difficult to rank over big brand for short tail keywords; but for long tail ones, you can!

My website is very new and I would position it, but do not know how to start with long tail keywords.
