What should you look for when hiring an SEO professional?

Let's assume you want to hire someone to do SEO for your site, what would you look for or require from them?

If I were hiring someone to do SEO, then I'd want to know if they were going to be using automated software and require a list of links where my site was submitted/accepted.

Plus, I'd want to read testimonials from satisfied customers.

Not to mention, that their own site should be very highly ranked for their niche keywords (SEO, etc) in Google.

If an SEO expert can't be high ranked for SEO keywords, then how are they going to get my site ranked well?

Of course, I'll look for positive reviews. Like here in SEOClerks, there's one I would like to hire to give my site some backlink boost, and it seems all are satisfied to his work, even Jordan.

When you say positive review my understanding is the review or feedback from the past clients. That is one good way of determining the quality of work that an SEO worker possesses because satisfied customers are always the hallmark of quality work by the service provider. But what if the SEO worker is new in this market place and has no clients yet? I think you can also check on his resume and ask for reference to his past work and clients.

Seeing a sample of the person's work is nice too. It's good that you've found someone to work on your site for SEO.

Maybe ask for a list of sites that they previously worked on. Is that possible?

I would suggest that too. Also, make sure to check out where those sites are ranked for the keywords that were targeted. For instance, if a site was targeting, 'toys', and ranked on page 200, then that would be a fail SEO job. And, you might not want to hire the person who did SEO for that site.

If I will be the one to hire an SEO worker, the first thing that I will ask for is the resume or the past clients. The second step is to ask the past clients about the performance of the SEO worker. The next step is to offer a scheme or arrangement that he will be paid in percentage on the amount of profit that will result from his SEO work on my website. More likely he will not agree to that but I am willing to give him some money up front but not that big amount.
