Attracting backlinks by being helpful

If you participate in a forum that is related to your blog's niche, you can establish yourself as an expert and attract new readers to your blog by simply being helpful to others who are experiencing problems. Answer questions from other forum members. Over time, they will happily visit your site (either as a result of seeing the link in the forum signature or the profile page) and possibly give you a link back from their own blog as thanks for your assistance with resolving an issue.
