Do you have a chat thread?

On a niche forum, is it really necessary to have a chat thread or one that is for random off topic comments? This thread isn't about anything in particular but mostly random thoughts or comments. Have you used this idea? Does it work for your forum?

Off topic areas are sort of nice because then you can ask opinions about anything and everything. I like them a lot.

I have a never ending thread on my forum that is a nice hodge-podge of various things. I'd always meant to split it off but now it runs into dozens of pages. It was fun helping to create that

This chat thread I was talking about was more like a chat room, just on the forum. And, I think it produced some really great content.

Well it sounds like it was a success then if there was great content on there. You can not beat that.

A chat thread might be useful if you did not really want to have a general chat area on your forum. This could also be a space to copy/paste a transcript from your chat room sessions.

Yep! I use it to let the members and staff just have some nice, clean and joking fun with one another to lighten the moods of everybody and keep a nice environment for everybody.

Great for hellos and goodbyes and for random weather comments, etc. that don't really need a thread of their own.

Most forums have an off topic or general chat section. It would be rare to see a forum without it.

I tend to have a general chat thread for my members and staff to chat and just enjoy themselves. I think that it makes it easier for the community to have an enjoyable time talking to one another instead of spamming other threads or spamming through Private messaging.

It is not something that you have to have. But yet it is rather nice just to sit back once and a while and chat with others, asking whatever you want or saying whatever is on your mind.

I feel that chat threads are nice. It is a nice place for those forum members to relax and get to know each other as well.

They are not necessary. But I feel that they are rather nice to have. I like being to go to one and just chat about whatever.

Chat threads are great if you want to take a break from what you are working on. I like them and do not mind a forum that has them.

Chat threads are good because when some members get time they can spend that time chatting with people, friends and new members Do you have a chat thread? this can create a friendly environment.

On my general chat forum, we have a chat thread that goes on for pages and pages. It could easily be split off into new threads, but the one long thread seems to be working fine.

On niche forums its always good to have random chat section and on that is always a plus point.. further if you have some good general chat thread , you will get members more engagement to the forum overall.

I don't mind a 'general chat' section on a subforum. But it bugs me when people post randomness for threads like, 'Just ate a cheeseburger'. There is really no value to that and it could just as easily be posted as an update on one's profile page and not as a forum thread. If a member wants to comment about today's lunch, ideally they could make the thread more universal such as 'What did you eat for lunch today?' and then all members are welcome to chime in with answers.

@Beverly Agree on your point .. Do you have a chat thread? .. Thread should be universal and not about personal habit or deeds ..

Chat threads are good for trivial comments and nonsense conversation but for a meaningful topic, you will want to keep it to the general chat or niche section so that it has value to all members.

I'm in favor of having forum members start their own unique threads in the general chat section (even if those threads are for irrelevant or trivial matters) as it increases the over all thread count on the forum.

A very long chat thread that goes way off topic could be fun and a good way to keep others from spamming their off topic threads in your niche subforums. This type of thread would be more useful than having an entire off topic subforum.
