What is your opinion on meta tag keywords?

One of the things that has recently come up in the latest penguin update, is the use of meta keywords. Apparently sites were penalised if they used meta keywords along with keyword rich urls, keyword rich H1's and H2's.

Has anyone experineced a ranking drop that has these things keyword optimised?

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the keywords meta tag was a critical element for early search engines. Much like the dinosaurs, this tag is a fossil from ancient search engine times.

The only search engine that looks at the keywords anymore is Microsoft's Bing and they use it to help detect spam. To avoid hurting your site, your best option is to never add this tag.

I think Meta Keywords are invalid now and actually negatively affect you as a webmaster. Why you ask? Because if you fill out the meta keywords tag, you've just told anyone that can look at your source code what keywords you are targeting. This is very helpful for your competitors.

I usually do not heavily optimize my meta tags, but I do optimize my H1, H2, and H3 tags on some sites, and my ranking dropped by about -10.

Yesterday google update the pagerank. I do optimized the meta tag keyword and H1, H2, H3. My PR grow up from 0 to 3. I think the meta tag still has a positive effect on our sites.

Bert, In my opinion meta tags are really helpful in increasing the keyword frequency but at the same time if ts hampering the quality of the article then it harmful. Nothing should compromise with quality!

Meta keyword tags play no role in SEO today. Not on-page SEO anyway. They aren't looked at or even considered by Google any more and using them (and using too many of them) can look like you're trying to manipulate the SERPs. Tags on the other hand are different, I'm not talking about meta tags, I'm talking about blog tags such as WordPress blog tags, these can help your site to rank for things and are often indexed in Google and how people find your site for something. Many times I get more traffic from my blog tags than I do my blogs page titles or the content itself. Plus as pointed out here, using meta keywords can tell your competitors what you're trying to rank for. Although that isn't too hard to tell just by looking at your site anyway but in 2016, you probably shouldn't use them or if you do, only use a couple. Don't go adding 20+ meta keywords as that is just pure keyword stuffing and is a bh method that will get you nowhere in the SERPs.

May I ask this question that was bugging me for some time now? I have noticed that when I create a thread in a forum there is the space for tags which I assumed was nothing of importance. But when I started learning SEO the tags seem to be the keywords for the content. Am I right on my assumption? If I would tag the content of the thread in the forum with 20 keywords will that constitute spamming? My point is the forum member can sabotage the SEO of the forum by keyword stuffing.
