What is the relationship of Backlink Building and Keywords? Do both work with each other?
Backlink building means you post your content on another website or blog and point it towards your website. e.g. making forum signatures with your website url, posting an article or any content and specifying your url anywhere in post.
whereas keywords are used by people for searching websites.... e.g. if someone search for microsoft certifications then they will get all the site names which are having keywords microsoft and certifications in their meta keywords. in other words they are the words used by search engines to solve user requested queries.

Maybe the relationship of keyword and backlink was asked because they work in the same way with the search. When someone does a search for a particular keyword the search engine would search the list containing links that are related to the given keyword. The link can come from the keyword of the web page or the backlink. But I go for the backlink because it does not only give you a boost in the ranking of search engines but also traffic when the reader of the web page would click on your backlink.
You must use the anchor text of the backlink as the keyword but do not over optimize.
keywords and backlinks both help in increasing visibility on search engines. If you have used keywords properly and have generated backlinks from reputed sources, your website will appear in the top search results for the given keyword. If you appear on top, you will gain organic traffic.
My understanding of keywords is the tag that you place on the web page when you upload contents. That keyword will be visible to the search engine that it can give your website the opportunity to be in the search list. The backlink is the link of your website that you post on other websites like forums, blogs, and even social media which are called social bookmarks.
