I think quality content is the first item that the search engines check. That is based on the majority of the discussions about SEO that I have read from time to time. Without contents your site will not be checked by the search engine crawlers that’s why you need to upload new contents regularly. If the content is not good enough then there is a tendency for the ranking of your site to go down.

There are a lot of factors in this but what you have said it more or less what search engines like to see.
as long as by reputation you mean high quality backlinks of course. Google won't appreciate 1,000,000+ spam links.

In my roaming around this site, particularly about the ins and outs of SEO methods, my understanding with the search engines is that they are looking for a good description related to the niche and good contents also related to the niche. For instance, when you search about space travel, the title and description of the websites in the search list are about space travel and the contents are also about space travel. In other words, the website should be true to the niche all the time.
