For the fact that there are possibly billions of people using one social media sites or another makes an opportunity available for online scammers to set up their accounts and carry out extensive promotional activities just to lure the gullible ones to invest in their business products and services offer. Below are the red flags to look out for when checking online stores set up on social media sites.

THERE ACCOUNT WOULD POP UP SUDDENLY

All these scammers are in the business of creating new social media accounts or pages on daily basis. So, when dealing with any accounts or page marketing one product or another, always check out its time of set up, if it's still new without much transaction history, there is a 90% possibility of the account being set up to scam people.

FEW REVIEWS ONLINE ABOUT THE ACCOUNT OR PAGE

These scammers knows that it would be very difficult to convince people to patronize whatever they are offering or selling without having good reviews about their products. So, most of the times they either pay for the reviews or set up other fake accounts and used them to write reviews that are lies just to mislead people.

Always make sure to check out the accounts which gave reviews and see if they are fake accounts.

THEY WILL OFFER YOU CHEAPER PRICE

This is actually the main trick most online scammers uses to throw off the people they scam off balance. Most times, we look to save a little money from whatever we purchase online and as a result of that these scammers have taken advantage of it and offer cheaper price rates. So, when you are buying and the selling price drops too low from what other online stores offers, it's better to run and avoid falling into the trap set for you.

In conclusion, applying caution is the best way to avoid getting scammed online and also not being too greedy because it's our greed that makes us vulnerable to scammers and they always show no mercy.

Not having many (if any!) reviews always makes me a little wary, especially if the company markets itself as something well established that has been around for a long time. I’d always want to pay attention to that kind of thing and trust my gut instict.

I agree with you, I always read the review first. Sometimes their are some page with repeating review comments and that's my cue to stay away from that page.

That's funny. I've seen a lot of sites with that as well. They have bots that automate fake messages and reviews. They make it look as if it's happening in real time. But once you look closely, you can see the bad grammar and the awkward words they use.

I've seen those too - it's a sure fire sign for me to stay far, far away! Often if I'm checking out a website that has reviews, I look at the one star reviews first. Usually you get a good feel for what a business is doing wrong by looking at those (and they tend to be legit, rather than bot-created!)

That's so true. I'm not confident with sites that have few authentic reviews and interaction from real people. It's a good thing many of us are now aware of such scams. It's best to avoid them since they're only after your money.

Wow this is a great article and I really appreciate it much because of being so helpful and informative. First of all I really don't believe that social media sites are being made or designed to scam people because its main purpose it to give entertainment and to be a useful platform for every people. The only problem is that scammers are taking the opportunity to lure people with the use of these social media sites which should not be the case. They are setting up fake accounts so that they can gain trust of their prospective victims and this is the sad part because the social media sites that we think would help us into certain things will be the one that might put us into trouble if we will not make an extra caution in using it.

Maybe there are social media network that are designed to scam people but they are the small and new ones in the internet. With the established social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the others that are with us for years now, they are bona-fide social media network for the benefit of the users. I don’t think there is a bad intention from those big social network sites.

There's a lot of Scammers in Facebook and Messenger, most of them are into Ponzi Schemes which they mask and present as income opportunities or businesses. Facebook should police their site and weed out / delete posts of Scammers.

Yes, it's not safe there. Though, you can easily identify them if you're aware of such scams. Keeping your account safe is important. Never give out any information they could use. It's best to not even interact at all. Reporting them to Facebook will prevent them from causing further damage.

I agree with that Facebook have a lot of scammers since I have experienced such situation before wherein someone would offer me some jobs that are offering a great salary but then I already knew that it was a sort of scam that is why I refrain such an offer and blocked that particular account so that it will not disturbed me anymore.

Correct. These guys have scammed so many innocent users. One of my friends got into the hands of these scammers, where he lost $230, after being promised to be earning some passive income from the investment.

The sad thing is that Facebook rarely weeds them out.

Yes, you are right. It's best to be very vigilant and careful because the scammers are also vigilant and observant. They analysis and plan their attacks. I guess, it would be too foolish for a person to be convinced even with just a single introduction of the scammer. Everyone should know that trusting people especially of no trustworthy background is risky. The world is full of scammers nowadays. Online community doesn't trust each other easily.

I think technology is definitely being misused. For example, adblockers are letting some ads viewed if the companies pay them. Browsers are collecting the data and selling them to others. And list of such goes on and on. You can see that people have to realize what else can be done in case of the things. Some things are in our control and some are not in our control anymore for sure.

I think bad factors happen because people pay attention to the small details. And they think taking advantage of the same is necessity. So it can be reasonable to consider the fact that people will always scam. As long as we don;t pay attention. We are going to suffer in the same.

That's disgraceful that ad blockers are doing that. Sad that for most people, their morals and ethics will go out the window as soon as someone offers money. Seems to happen more and more these days that people can be paid off to do a range of unethical stuff or just turn a blind eye to things.

I've never bought services from anyone through social media. I always ask to be pointed in the direction of an official website, especially if the person or company is brand new. However, the prices for a company's services may vary for different reasons. You'll always get a good rate buying directly from a company. If you're buying through a middle man (freelancing site or platform) the price will be higher because the platform they sell through most likely takes a percentage of their profits. So to make up the difference they 'up' their amounts.

The usual advice now is to be aware of the scams around us because they are almost everywhere in the internet. We were hit by a scammer a few months ago that the email appeared to be sent by a relative but it was really from a scammer. We were instructed to go to the site https://casinofacebook87.webnode.com/ that was obviously a scam site but we still investigated and we confirmed it to be a scam.

That happens a lot here too. Scammers try and send out emails pretending to be from reputable places like banks, with a link to a fake site where they try and get your internet banking user ID and password. Sadly I think some people assume that they are legitimate emails and then provide those details to the scammers.

Maybe because Facebook has a huge number of users. It means more prospect to deceive. Scammers increase their profit easily. Besides ,mostly of the social media user are just simply a user. Not everyone cares about the technical side of software. People are just there to use and enjoy it's uses. It is difficult to distinguish a person who's intention is to fool others.

In this present age, scammers are very rampant everywhere and they find social media sites a good platform to scam people. People nowadays will offer you goods or services at a very low price which is to good to be true. However, one way to avoid being scammed, try to make a background check on the supplier through checking reviews. This way you will have an idea which is legit and not.

Everytime it's nearing Christmas Season there's a lot Scammers posting their get rich quick scams in social media. Most of them are investment scams and networking scams. Just be aware of it and before even going to their site and signing up just remember to google it for scam reviews.

Reviews and testimonials aren't always the most reliable when trying to decide whether you should buy something from a store you've never heard of. Anyone can write a fake review after all.

Odds are you can find what is being sold on more established sites that have been around for a longer time. That's where I would buy something when I need it.

The longer a business has been around, the less likely it is that it is run by scammers. They usually don't stick around long enough because once their reputation is tarnished they'd have to find another platform where they can again build themselves up so they can scam more people.

I like the point about reviews and testimonials. I give businesses the same treatment that I give products; If I’m not seeing an adequate amount of positive reviews, then I’m not buying. Not having any sort of reviews at all, or an extremely limited amount, definitely means that I’m clicking away.

That being said, I don’t really use any of the market places on social media. If I buy something, it’s from reputable sites which have a long, positive history of providing good service. If I’m buying used products, I’ll usually opt for finding the product in person rather than ordering online, since that way I can really see the condition for myself.

With a lot of people using social media sites, there will alwats be someone who will try to get advantage of it. I agree that peiple should get more cautious as they don't know who they are dealing with. They should do a small background check on the person before doing a transaction with him.

Facebook and and other social can be easily manipulated by scammers since the websites are not that strict. So it's your judgement if you are going to trust these websites or not. It's one of the disadvantage in social media because you can never trust if they are telling the truth or not since you are not talking or dealing with them in personal.

I also would not buy any product from a person I did not know or a social media site, I agree that you can get fake reviews or testimonials.Rather I would also look for the official website of the company or vendor and buy from there. The internet has its advantages, but one of the biggest disadvantages is scams. We have to be careful of scammers on all the platforms that we use. Scamming is not exclusive to social media.

I think that some scammers are taking advantage of the social media sites to be a place for their illegal activities and we should be cautious about it. We must avoid those people who are offering to us something in exchange for money because we ill never know if it is scam or not. Any site that "feels" wrong should be proceeded with caution. Sites with too good a deal is always one to watch out for. You always need to trust your gut instinct, and when in doubt just google it out!

I think in my own perspective social media sites are made to entertain people and to get connected with their love ones which is really true because we can use social media whenever we feel bored or if we want to relax for a while. We can send messages to our loved ones to know their current situation at all times.
