Microdata is a format of adding metadata to HTML to describe content. In terms of SEO, is it worth the effort to add microdata to your website?
Well, adding meta tags is still good for small businesses, like online stores, restaurants, and creative works like books, movies and recipes. Overall it is still useful to any kind of business having trouble in getting traffic from search engines. You have to know first how to Integrate it into your site's HTML code. Try going to Schema.org for a step by step guide.

I had read that meta tags are also giving the site an advantage with the search engines because it is one of the first items that the search engine crawlers are checking on. And if you play your cards right with the meta tags then you will get a good number of traffic from the search engines. However I think it works well for small sites especially a personal site that is managed by the owner since meta tags cannot be compared to other SEO methods in terms of obtaining large traffic.
I think it can be really useful for restaurants, small business, retail shops and other places. It can show the direction for the maps. And also show the microdata in search. So it can be really good in many ways. How we make use of it depends on the business. That's what I have learned so far.
All I know about MIcrodata is will give the searchers something thrill about the information that they are looking for in the web. It's something like a little highlights to make the searchers become interested and click it.
I am not well-versed with metadata although we were using that in the olden days before Google came along. But with the present trends of search engine optimization, this is the first time that I’ve come across the use of meta data, if it is important or not anymore. My opinion on that is to use it when you can since we really do not know the exact algorithm of search engines. For all you know, metadata is one important element for SEO.
Think of this data as same as SCHEMA. That data usually makes things easier for anyone who wants to get the most out of their business or the property listing on the search engine. For example business that wants to show some content on the search engine. They can make sure of the schema to appear in the page. It can get a bit easier that way for small business who wants to see microdata on the webpage.
With microdata you get micro-results, so you better pay attention to all other mayor SEO as your contents, H tags, meta tags, image optimization and else... Instead of spending too much time on micro-data, you maybe better invest time in getting quality social signals and quality backlinks from niche related websites. I don't say that micro data is not important at all, but it's last thing you should care about if you done all before that
Had no clue what you were talking so I searched for a definition or clarification.
Microdata is a WHATWG HTML specification used to nest metadata within existing content on web pages. Search engines, web crawlers, and browsers can extract and process Microdata from a web page and use it to provide a richer browsing experience for users.

That sounds like a good thing.
This article explains it better though.
What is Microdata, and How Can it Help My SEO Ranking? (Date: May 19, 2017)
EXCERPT: "... microdata is preferred by search engines, because it makes their crawling easier for your website. It tells them, “Here’s what to highlight and what is important about my piece!” "
Sounds like microdata is worth it to me.
