I used Elgg in the past, and when I mean past I am speaking of a couple years ago. I always thought that "Elgg" was a very interesting name for a Content Management System (CMS) because I have no idea what "Elgg" is in terms of a word. Never the less, it's a 4 letter word attached to a 3 letter .ORG TLD so the power in that says all it needs to.

Upon my initial interest, I wanted a system to build a community of people who earned money on the internet (not just a forum, but something like Facebook targeted to only people who made money online) and I have found that it didn't meet my needs.

Since it didn't meet my needs, I didn't use it and haven't heard anything about Elgg since. So with that being said I do not believe Elgg is a very good CMS for the social network niche. If it was everyone would be using it to create clones of Facebook. Don't think it has that much compatibility to do so. But that is just my opinion..

Thanks for sharing your experience. I installed Elgg recently and created a site called GG Club (can be accessed through http://GingerGarlic.club
The basic idea is to create a site that will allow users to do social blogging, socialize with people as well as blog. Elgg seems nice but there seems to not support.

If a software you are using, that is open-source, doesn't have support, or a big community I would be very cautious about using it. I would recommend an alternative but it is on another marketplace and I am basically a mod on the community discussions area so I don't believe it would be very wise for me to post that link. However, just Google search clone, or social media clone script and I am sure it will come up in the results. You may have to pay for it, but it's fairly reasonably priced.

Alternatively, you can go on Github and find a script that is released under GNU General Public License, so that way you can tweak it and "make it your own". I probably would not use Elgg since there is basically no support or community.

What is your recommendation. Dolphin seems to be very good, but I don't think I can pay the monthly subscription fees. Wordpress with buddy press and bbpress looks boring. Is there any open source cms to create social networking site. How about social engine and pligg?

Elgg CMS seems to be good enough for most of the upvote type of the content. It was designed after the Digg. And it seems to be one good option when backlinks were good source of the income for people. Now the backlinks are devalued. So this CMS is not much into demand as much as it was used to be in the past. Now things are lot different for this CMS. Another thing is that there are some really different CMS out there as you can see.

I am planning a social networking site that also allows users to post blog entries. Elgg seems to be the kind I was looking for, however, the main problem is there is no existence of Elgg community.
Initially, I was planning to use Dolphin, but I could not afford the subscription fees. can you give a better alternative to elgg?

I think making extensions and making changes part. That is where you need the community. And you may need that community really bad. So that being said, this seems like a good CMS. You can learn and find out where you can integrate otherwise you have to choose another CMS.

I was waiting to see who commented on this post, because it is something I have never heard of. It sounds like it has mixed reviews from those who have used it to help with backlinks.

The newest version of elgg was released a couple of months back. The script is light weight. Therefore, I decided to use it. The main problem is there is no active community. When there is no community, it will be difficult if I encounter problems. The script is nice, but there is no community support.

I guess as long as people will use it, there will everntually be a community built up around this so that you can ask questions in regard to the product and get the kind of support that you need.

Saw this post earlier on, but couldn't comment because I have never heard about it, had to do a little research to know what it all about and as you stated it all about managing content.Well, for me I believe what may work for A might be a nightmare for B,it depends on who is involve,I have never been involved in this,so might not be in a better position to give a verdict but if it works for you, then so be it,use it to your advantage.

The CMS seems to be the kind I was looking for. however, there are some plugins missing, for instance video and image embedding plugins. There are plugins available, but there is no active community to help me.

Great to hear you like the discussions area. There is a lot of information on the community discussion. I would definitely check it every day to find valuable content that interests you. So many users have been helped by those whom regularly post discussions/topics here. The SEO posts (not sure if you're into SEO) are probably the best anywhere, and the best thing is that the information is FREE. No need to pay subscriptions or anything for the content. Most other SEO sites make you pay for that information but we don't! How Good is Elgg CMS? Were here to help others!

Yes, I'm learning a lot in this community. I just started learning SEO and knew a little about it. I have my blogsite and I am applying what I have learned here. But I don't really understand yet the whole thing about SEO. It's kinda difficult for me and not sure if I'm doing it correctly. I'll just try what I have been learning here and hope someday I would really understand SEO and could use that as another source of income.
