Can you bring a forum back from the dead?

Sometimes forums can die off which can be sad for a lot of the previously active users and the forum staff. Sometimes, the owner just gives up and decides to either sell off the forum (if it is big enough) or just close it down because it is too expensive and not worth it to keep it open. But can you bring a forum back from the dead? And how would you go about doing it? Is it possible to just get some paid posters to post around the forum to make it look active again and hope that previously active members decide to come back.

If previous forum had some value, good number of members and decent moderators, it's much easier to revive such forum then build new one from scratch. Specially if the forum is not erased and if it stil have some backlinks or indexed pages on search engines. I guess it worth investing time in such reviving and promoting again. Contacting old members is also good idea and adding some new features to it can make it better then ever before. Just go ahead!!!

True. As long as the datas and links are still there, it will not be that hard to revive. By then I guess it wouldn't be that hard finding members or mods.

Yes, you can revive an old forum. Your chances of success will be more likely if you can get some members that used to post there to come back first. I'd do that before getting paid posters because previously active members are more likely to feel some sort of attachment to the community.

I agree with the above poster. Sometimes if you like a forum and it dies, you are likely to be a bit sad about it. I think trying to get previous posters back is a good idea. Maybe if it starts back up again getting paid posters involved again would be a good idea.

From what I had seen in one local forum that was revived, there were 6 active members at the start. Those 6 persevered in posting until one by one, walk-ins came and the forum was alive after a month. But the posts are of high quality especially with one or two of the active posters kept on a humorous banter that aroused the interest of guests. I know it's difficult to get 6 friends who will do the posting for you so more likely the paid posters will be your recourse. There are lots of forums that rely on paid posting schemes that even if the forum is already alive, they retain the paid posters since it is worth the cost. But just take note that the quality of post should be good and relevant so it would be interesting to walk-ins.

I believe that once something dies out or goes out of interest it can never really fully be what is was before since there are always new topics roaming around every day which catch people's attention easily

Yes, why not. But the main question is are you willing to give time and money.
If you want to bring your forum from dead, you will have to give time. You need to have time for reviving the discussion, calling back the existing members, inviting more people to join, create moew threads etc.
You need money to hire a designer and give a fresh look to your forum, you have even have to change the logo and banner. You also need to establish some sort of reward system so that members are encouraged to join and post regulalry.

I have seen some of the admins who have done it. And some of the admins didn't do anything and just pushed their own thinking. And it didn't worked. So if done hard work then it's definitely possible. I guess for each of such forum to work properly one has to invest on members. I guess in that context it's possible to have the forum to come back. Good members are going to make the forum successful. I have seen due to facebook groups it's hard to bring back lot of forums but it's not that hard.

If forums are not closed down due to fraud they can surely get back and members will help them revive. I was at Morachat a nice forum but the owner ran into losses and could not face us. He just said that he is having some technical difficulty. If that forum comes back I will truly rush there.

It depends on how many posters in your forum previously. You can easily revive the forum through emailing members that your forum is back again and offer some rewards if they will be posting back again. It will also be good if you use post exchange services like postloop and theforumwheel to get more active posters to your site.

Hi Darth, this depends on the death date of that forum. I mean, if your forum died five years ago it will be very difficult to revive it but not impossible. Another factor that is affecting your forum is the number of users, your interface and your time to invest.
Yes, I think it can be done, but you must work a lot and invest a lot of time in your forum!

Yes, you can bring back a dead forum. Why couldn't you? It is all about attracting new members and posters. One of the options is definitely getting paid posters to start forum getting active again, then a good campaign, social media exposure, SEO and other methods can be used to get it on its feet.

Anything is possible if you set your mind to it - if you are passionate about the forum then stick with it. The revival won't be overnight, it might take time but you shouldn't give up. Success is always a long process.

I think this is possible or not.

It depends on the forum that you want to get it back to online

If a forum has a large of useful posts/threads then it is easy than a forum has nothing.

Just my 2 cents!

Hi there thanks for your query. Yes! I completely agree with you, I saw many of forum die or closed after certain of time. It may happen several reasons. I am not going to talk reason of die or close forum by admin. But, it is really hurt very active forum members or staffs, who specially work as paid member. I have faced same situation previously. Which was very unfortunate. But, very strong and establish forum never going to die. yes dead forum can make alive with previous activity, if admin has old data base and admin can knock again those user to join for same forum, though it is really hard. And as SEO concern, it may work for old index-able backlinks to redirect to your new forum.

Yes, you can but it's going to take a lot of commitment. You can bring it back from the dead by giving the visitors a reason to stay, a reason why they should check you out every day. This could be a new feature, a new section, a new interesting topic, or just something unique that you think would keep users entertained. Aside from that, a loooot of promotion will have to be done.

I think it's definitely possible (albeit difficult) to revive a forum and bring it back from the dead. One of the best ways to help revitalize a dead forum is to reach out to older members via email. Most forums have some sort of mass email function that you can use, so being able to tell everyone who was previously interested that the site is back up is going to end up being a huge boon to bringing the forum back from the dead. From there obviously you want to start bringing in new blood who are going to help keep the forum from dying off again, and you're back in business.

Yes! You can bring back a death forum. But it requires a lot of commitment. One of your first tasks is to find out why its die in the first place. And then introduced more innovative features than the previous forum, which could attract the older members back.

I don't know what niche your forum is. What I'll advise is you look at other forums similar to yours and tailor yours to what is trending and the general overview.

Of course it is possible if the forum still retains many if it data, and back links. Getting paid poster to post on the forum is a good way to start at reviving the forum back. With the paid posting, the forum will start to get committed and real visitors gradually and it will require more commitment from the moderators and forum owner. This is so to avoid the scenario that led to the forum closure in the first instance.

Yes, I believe it is possible to bring back a forum once it's inactive, You can achieve this by changing the strategy you have before, explore ways to get more members, offer incentives and contests, appoint new moderators and create interesting threads and conversations. It also helps if your forum is focusing on one thing only.

It's very much possible to give life to a stagnant or dead forum as long as the niche is viable. A forum owner can entice old members to resume posting with invitations for a relaunch. Make the relaunch a huge event by giving off incentives to returning members and newbie members. More importantly, give each member a reason to keep coming back to post. It can be a good investment to hire paid posters for a while until the forum is back on its feet.

I'm into some forums that has gotten dormant for a while without recent posts. I was shocked that the forum owners actually changed the date of the old posts to make it appear that the posts were recent. I do think that this is not the way to do it. This could easily backfire and turn off old posters.

Forums are dying left and right at a rapid pace. The days of forums are over and social media and youtube and google are taking over. Even big forums like Playstation and Xbox are suffering. So the answer to your questions is its highly unlikely you're going to be able to bring a forum back from the dead so I wouldn't spend anymore money than you're willing to lose.

I agree that it is more difficult to bring back to life a dead forum than creating a new forum. But I disagree that forums are dying because it depends on the niche of the forum. I am a forum provider and I roam around the internet for possible jobs. There are so many forums that are still dynamic. Maybe it is the niche that matters because like the fans of cock fighting or other sports, they have their own forums.

The only difference between a dead forum and a running forum is the activities. This means if members and staff start posting again and updating some rules and posts, the forum will be active again but it might take longer to stabilize the forum.

I've know people who bought dead forums and tried to bring them back to life and they failed miserably.

Before attempting something like this you need to find out why the forum died in the first place. Find out what happened so you can determine whether there is a possible remedy. If you have some doubts, trust your gut instinct, there's no need to bother trying to bring that forum back from the dead.
