Who names all the Google Updates?

This is just for interest sakes... who names all the Google Updates and is there a reason for so many of the huge updates firstly being named after animals and very often all starting with a P?

Panda, Pigeon, Penguin? How come there are different updates also for Panda, Penguin and Pigeon.

I used to think there was one update for example called Panda, now I realize that there are loads of different Panda updates.

Can anyone shed some light on the different types of updates and some history?

There is one i know called hummingbird - it is a new search Google algorithm update used by Google to return better results than other algorithms. The name ''hummingbird'' is given the name because the name comes from being ''precise and fast''. it delivers search results very fast.

This is a very unique and interesting discussion.

I haven't really heard anything in regards to the update names other than them being more easy to remember. I guess it's more easy for workers and users of the search engine to remember "Penguin", "Panda", and "Pigeon" than remembering Search Engine Update 10.4.3.3.2.4.5.0.

Only one update I can find that has some information and backstory:

Panda Update, apparently named after "Navneet Panda", a Google software engineer. It appears that Google just used their last name, and continued with using animals names that started with a "P", I could be wrong though.

LOL Everett well it could be as simple as that couldnt it? I can certainly see why it would be more useful to name them something interesting and different rather than a number like you gave in your example. That would not exactly be easy to refer to in conversation at all.

And like Chetaseo said there is Hummingbird too which goes with the animal theme but not the P...

Google has some weird ass names for all its updates. For search updates, it's all about animal names for some reason. But now that I think about it, what about Android updates?

Android updates are all about food. Marshmallow, Nougat, Lolipop, Kitkat...etc.
Apple (Cheetah, Jaguar, Panther, Lion, etc) is doing this kind of stuff too, I think these names, are just inside jokes that we will never understand fully. Kinda weird that what they joke about eventually is going to be used by us in our daily life.

ROFL oh my Cristian, honestly I have never even heard about the Android update names... that is so funny. It's like a kid in a candy store throwing all those names out!

Ok so it is obvious that these companies like to have a theme to stick to for their updates. I like the Apple names, it sounds powerful... all large felines. But perhaps Apple should be the one with food names? haha

This is interesting, and to be honest I sometimes thought about it as most of these update names are quite funny. It seems that they like animals and birds Who names all the Google Updates? However considering the importance of these updates the names are quite absurd if you ask me.
