Cloning a popular website in order to make money. Could you do it?

A lot of people sell these clone type scripts and designs of popular websites and make a good amount of money off of each sale because of the time it takes to program and design them.

Would you purchase a clone website script and try to run your own popular website to compete with the original?

Or would you use the concept to break into different niches and try to profit?

A lot of people do this and not that many can break out on their own because they think that all they have to do is set up the website and the people will come in to spend thousands of dollars a month. It doesn't work even remotely close to that and I hope I didn't just crush your dreams. A very popular website that you already know, SeoClerks, took the online marketplace idea and pushed it into the SEO, Design and Online Marketing niche and did very well for themselves, but they are a rare case. There was a void in the niche for a dedicated marketplace and the founders started their coding and programming to fill that void. They then marketed it well enough to get the snowball affect going where other people begin to share the website. They did a great job back then and are still doing an amazing job today. But I'm not really here to talk about SeoClerks, they're just an example of what I'm talking about Cloning a popular website in order to make money. Could you do it?

Would you be able to clone a website yourself, or buy the script/design, and implement it as your own and turn a profit?

I actually have an idea to set something up in a different niche and it uses a type of marketplace, but more of a crowd funding type platform and not a buy and sell services platform Cloning a popular website in order to make money. Could you do it? I have the niche where there's a void for the system and I want to set up my website so that I can capitalize on it. I intend on purchasing a clone script/design and rebranding it as my own so that I can build my brand at the same time I'm pulling in profits.

I think it's possible if you find the right niches, what do you think?

As someone who actually creates 'clones' of popular money making websites, I would like to give my brief experiences, and opinions about all of this.

Can you make a lot of money?
It depends. It depends on your business model, and how much traffic you have to the website. If you have a clone of another website, or a website that is similar to another one why would people want to join your 'clone'? You have to change things up a bit, add features the original website wouldn't or doesn't have.

This would depend on if the website is copyrighted, and trademarked. If you took a design, and basically cloned the entire thing.. chances are you could be sued. So you would need to change the layout a bit.

Yes I think it can be done, but just because it can be done doesn't that anyone and everyone can do it.

There would need to be a lot of time and effort spent on planning it and then it would need to be marketed correctly. I believe a lot of people might think that things are easier than they are.

A business idea might be brilliant but it will still take hard work and dedication to the task, just because it is brilliant does not mean it will drive itself.

I personally don't like the clone idea though. I like making something of my own and doing it well enough that other people will want to clone me Cloning a popular website in order to make money. Could you do it?

In the past I've tested/tried many of those scripts, and I can say that they are functional same as original website but of course with some little differences between them. I think that depends how big is that site to compete with it, but one thing is sure I would never 'beat' original site with its clone, because people want to see unique things.

Cloning websites it's not that hard, but as Everett said you should make sure that website which you're trying to clone it's not copyrighted, because that means only 'problems' . However, you still can copy the layout and customize it for your needs, there are a plenty of websites with the same layout and colors, but that does not mean they are copies.

Fake it til you make it right!? Clones have been around for as long as sites worth cloning have. I remember when the first Facebook clones came out, they were basic PHP powered scripts that sort of looked similar to FB layout and kinda worked but not quite how the original did. That's how they still are today for even some of the newer clones that run on better technology and coded better and not really work like the original works. But still some clone scripts can be good and jumping on some of them with sites back then has been rewarding for some sites today. Such as microblog sites anyway but Twitter is the original microblog site. Anyone remember spnbabble.com?

For that reason I wouldn't really buy a clone of a site or a clone script. If I was going to go that route, I would do it how the original was done and build it from the ground up. But you can still be successful if you work at it, to some degree. But there's only so far you'll really be able to go unless you hire coders and do something unique that the original or all the other clone sites aren't doing.

It really depends on the site the clone was cloned on. What your idea is and whether there is a demand for it. Even if there isn't! That's the magic of social media sites in that there doesn't even have to be a demand for something it already exists.

But if there is that demand for something. And you can provide a half decent looking site with all the bells n' whistles that all the others have, then there is no reason why you cannot make that clone into a successful and thriving social media site of some kind.

By then, if you do, you should really think about upgrading and hiring some coders though. Cloning a popular website in order to make money. Could you do it?
