Do you use Facebook Groups? What about Polls?

Just a quick one. Just doing a bit of research!

I've been doing some testing on Facebook groups the past few days. Usually I'd post something to a group, press refresh and it will quickly get buried under tons of new posts. Especially for really large groups that are like 500k strong. Hey what's new?

But lately I've been experimenting with creating poll instead of standard posts. And for all intents and purposes, they get a much better response rate. They are much more engaging than regular group posts are. Polls by nature are naturally engaging.

Especially if they ask a question on something you might be interested in. This is where using power words come into play. Using the right power words for that group type. Since most of the big groups I post in are SEO / IM related, I can post a poll on something they might like to answer but also include a link to my site or something in that poll too.

For example, I've been posting polls on some of the things relevant to SEO and asking a question that has multiple answers such as

What Happens if You Build Too Many Links Too Fast?

And putting answers like
Godzilla Buys You an Ice Cream.
Aliens Came and Kidnap You.
Google Can Penalize You.

Then in that post, I'll also put something relevant to that as a problem and then provide a solution to it in the form of my website link.

That's just an example off the top of my head. And it take a little longer to create the each poll by hand. But generally I find I get a much better response rate (CTR) from it so it's well worth taking the extra time to create the poll itself.

Do you use FB group polls when doing FB group marketing and promotion?

Or do you just post regular posts. Post and go!

Cheers!

Hey Mike, I've only posted in groups to date and not tried out the polls but it certainly sounds interesting!

I've seen the options for polls before in groups but I usually use software to send out my posts to Facebook groups. Do you really think it would be worth my time to actually sit and do it manually and add polls?

How come there is no option to have a poll on Facebook pages? That would be something I would love to make use of, I find it strange that they offer Polls in groups but not pages?

Facebook groups are great for promotion. Last few months I've found a couple of very important things when it comes to Facebook groups:
  • Apparently, after Facebook updates a few months ago, people that used tools to post in multiple groups, with multiple accounts, so basically scam, are unable to produce viable traffic with this method anymore. This means the creation of traditional hardworking groups is again the best method of getting traffic from facebook groups.
  • I've notice that people can "smell" a promotion type group. Natural created facebook groups by people that aren't working in marketing can become really huge, viral and active. I'm currently in the negotiation process of taking over such a group. But I'm afraid that as soon as I start promoting only one website everyone will "smell" my marketing intentions and will leave.

Well, from the looks of it, polls would get more attention than ordinary posts which, as you said, would be buried way down especially if there are plenty of active posters in your group. However, the poll’s subject would depend on the relevance to the theme of the group. Another thing, you should be aware of the age bracket of the members so you can choose a better and interesting topic for the poll. The problem I see in the poll is when no one would click on it. The numbers will be there for everyone to see.
