How many backlinks will I need to rank?

In the early days of internet, all you had to do was get a lot of backlinks and you were good in terms of search engine ranking position. However, now there is more to search engine ranking than backlinks. You have all those on page SEO factors, domain authority, page authority and yet backlinks still play a vital role as they tell Google that your page/site is trusted by others (assuming they are not spam links). So what is a safe number of backlinks to get for your site before you start ranking or is backlinking a very small part of good SEO nowadays?

Backlinking is still a key factor in the rankings of a website. It's still pretty high on the SEO requirements list for ranking, but there are more things you will need besides just a few backlinks.

Determining how many backlinks you need in order to rank for a specific keyword, and stay there, is like telling me how long a piece of rope is. You cannot determine either because we don't have all of the information. I can say you need 1,000 backlinks and that a piece of rope is 10 feet long, but I'm probably wrong since every website is different and not all pieces of rope are cut at the same length, get it?

You need to focus on your links, but not just any links, you'll need some high quality links. I've been telling people for years to focus on high quality links, and not just PR, because you need to focus on domain age, domain authority, how active a domain is, and a ton of other factors that if I go into detail about this post will be 5,000 words long and no one will read it How many backlinks will I need to rank?

The best practices for building links is to focus on your niche related links first. These will pull in some link juice and also give you an added bonus of the niche relevancy. Next you can increase the backlink building and do some article marketing and possibly a press release if it's a well written one. Get on niche related forums and talk about your niche, this will help a ton with direct sales from the websites and not from the search engines.

So in the end, yes backlinks help you rank still and we cannot tell you how many you need in order to get to the top How many backlinks will I need to rank?

Razzy I will probably read an article like that if you wrote it. How many backlinks will I need to rank?

I think what also would count here is not just the amount and quality of backlinks that you manage to build but what your competitors have done. Some websites might need much less backlinks simply because they have few competitors and those competitors might be weak. Other websites might have loads of competitors that are strong websites.

I don't think this is a simple thing to answer at all link Razzy said, there are too many variables that go into it.

Hi Lynne I completely agree with you. Most of the website owner do not have idea about SEO affect how it is working. And they expect bulk backlink either quality. Of course 100 quality backlink more than working 1000 of non quality backlinks. But, if you think as freelancer work for selling SEO service, most of the buyer wanting bulk backlink either quality. And due to no sense of SEO they do not work for on-page SEO, which vital for search result. I saw some of my client give me keyword for ranking, which is not relevant of his site and he does not know how he choose it.

Yes Ajlancer, this was something i didn't understand completely when I first started working online. I had no clue about on-page SEO and expected to get ranked with SEO services! I didn't even do keyword research or optimize my posts for SEO...

As a web master it is essential to get all of that in order first before expecting to see any results from building backlinks or buying SEO packages.

Thankfully I now know mostly what I am doing and I do the majority of the work myself and then get my favorite seller here to juice up my work with one of his packages.

Hi sanfora Thanks for nice question. I should say for getting Google rank on first page or second page, it is not easy and it is not a joke. It is need time and plan and investment. So, if you have enough time to make a plan how to invest for SEO. Do, not forget backlink is the oart of off-page SEO and if you do not well optimized on-page, you never get Google rank only by off-page backlink. This is main fact. I do not say how much backlink need to get Google rank. It may few or it may some. It is up to your backlink plan. But do not forget bulk backlink always not work, sometimes it may penalty to your site.

So, I should say again make plan and invest on basis on plan.

Yes I agree with Ajlancer.

Getting page one ranking is not easy and I believe it starts firstly with good keyword research and then after that the next step is On-Page SEO.

Without those first steps it won't matter how many backlinks you purchase or the quality of those backlinks... I don't think you will ever rank.

Backlinks are important yes, but they are not the starting point.

Backlinks are undeniably important, but one can never say how many are required. It is more important to focus on the quality of the backlinks and to see that you naturally build links on a regular basis.

You can possibly manage to rank your website with just a few backlinks, but that would most probably be for low competition keywords that have relatively low search volumes, and as a result you would only get few visitors to the site.

At the end of the day any number of backlinks could be argued against. The reason for this is that the number will vary a lot from one business to another. A business could focus on say 100 backlinks to get off to a good start and expect first page rankings for some keywords, but it may vary according to the line of business and the keywords, and of course, the level of competitiveness you need to deal with.

Hey, take a look to the major websites in the world! They have an important social media presence (without fake likes, comments, etc). Their pages don't have too many backlinks...

I guess the need for many backlinks is not the main factor for the SEO capability of the website. My take is still the good contents since the search engines have their focus on the contents as the first line of screening. But with the backlinks, they also give traffic from the users who would click on those backlinks that you had spread in the internet. For the ranking of search engines, I guess you need hundreds of backlinks scattered on different websites.
