Where is your office space? Debate

Write the reason you're deleting this FAQ

Where is your office space?

Just out of interest where do you work? Do you work from home or from an external office? If you work from home do you have a separate office?

How do you separate your work life and your personal life?

Just wondering as my hubby and I want to move soon, perhaps even buy a house. I think having a separate room as my office is vital... he seems to think not.

Hey Lynne,
A separate office is indeed vital. At least for me. I work a lot more efficient and I can focus much better by having this. I had an actual office for a few months, and it was truly great but I had to get rid off it as things in my personal life at the time wouldn't allow me to pay rent and have all the extra costs for things like that. Nowadays, I'm working from my kitchen. I live in a rather small apartment right now and the only room I have, is my living room, which also is my bedroom. So it's key for me to be working from the kitchen, as I need that "I'll go to work"-feeling, so this is the best thing I can come up with right now.

Best Regards,

And you are near the coffee which is essential!

I know the feeling, it is important to have a place to go to work. I have a separate office space now. We have a double story house and the room in the top story is my office. It works really nicely.

I did have an external office a while back and it was nice in a way, but yes the expenses were huge and then in winter it became a drag driving out to my office when instead I could be working from bed. I've since moved office back home and I am much happier.

I don't have an office so I work from home and I do everything in my room. I pretty much have breaks in between my freelancing work and that is when I do my personal stuff. The length of the break depends on how much work I have to do.

There is a spare room in my house and I may it my office in the future. However, I think doing work in my room is working very well. Regarding, working in an office, I don't think it is necessary because it will be too costly and is not worth it unless you own a company.

Lynne
Yes I think if you own a company and especially if you have staff then an external office would be best. I wouldn't want any employees in my home even if I have a separate room to work in.

I have had an external office and I changed back to working from home after 2 years.

Few years back, after i bought laptop, i started working all around the house, even in my garden on nice days Where is your office space? Well... freedom of freelancing suits me and i like it. Soon i am planning to turn one of my rooms into office for freelancing and music practicing but still i may be all around Where is your office space? Who knows...

Yeah I have an office but I also work all over my house. In winter I often work in bed under the covers. In summer I often sit outside because I live on the beach so it is lovely to watch the waves while I work. If it is one of those hectic days when I have sick kids I have my laptop on the kitchen counter and a kid on my hip while I work one handed.

I want to get tan, well more tan than I naturally am and decided I shall actually spend this summer outdoors. Last year I basically wasted summer, and stayed indoors mostly. And when I finally wanted to work outside fall had already set in. So from now on, I'm going to use my daylight, and seasons for their advantages, especially if I am working from the comfort and security of my own home.

By the way, I wouldn't work on my laptop in a garden, bugs are attracted to light, and the laptop screen would be more than enough light for them and they'll forever be biting you. Not a good idea! LOL

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Lynne
Oh my gosh but you must have a lot of garden bugs?!

Yes come December when summer hits I will also be taking advantage of my lifetsyle more. I will get a tan too this year!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Everett
Not necessarily a lot of garden bugs, just those that seem to fly by or linger because of food, or whatever it is that makes them fly by. There is a lot of moisture here, and gardens where I live. We have many bird feeders, and attractors and some of the humming bird nectars unfortunately attract bugs too.

Not to mention that there is a seafood restaurant directly across from the house, so there's that factor too. Also, we have a Zen water thing, and that also attracts bugs. So it's just bug haven. Not too many bugs, but uncomfortable for sure.

Lynne
Nothing wrong with that. At night we get a lot of mosquitos, but nothing really during the day. The odd butterfly or bee yes but nothing would make me annoyed if I am working outside.

If I lived over the road from a Seafood Restaurant my wallet would be empty and my tummy full! We don't even have a decent take away place in our town and on a Sunday even the horrible restaurants and take away places are all closed. I miss being in the city sometimes. It can be so much more convenient, especially when it comes to shopping and food!

Actually, I have never ate at the seafood restaurant due to me being vegan. LOL. It's odd that I live practically right next to one when I'm a vegan. All I have to do is look over the fence and see if it is busy or not.

However, it actually creates a lot of traffic, and noise. They are so noisy it's unreal. The customers couldn't care less about the people whom live around the restaurant. And god forbid if you were to complain. Since the seafood restaurant owns a lot of land they simply would say "deal with it". But what they fail to realize is, is that the people whom live close to it will gladly travel elsewhere to eat seafood and living where I do there is MANY choices..

Oh my sister is vegan. It is hard to find great restaurants to eat at when you are vegan. The amount of times we went somewhere and they said they would make something nice for her and they did... and then cover it with grated cheese. Oh it is bad! She is busy launching her new website which focuses on vegan reviews.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Everett
Yes, i go through that a lot of the time. Basically no one knows exactly what vegans can eat. All they know is that they don't eat meat or diary. What they also fail to realize is that a lot of the food these days there is nothing but animal byproducts.

So I can completely understand. Even sometimes I may order a salad, and they will add croutons on the top of the salad, and I can tell they are not vegan. Sometimes they do try though so you have to give that to them. lol. Oh the joys of being a vegan.

Yes it can be hard. My sister usually just eats before she goes somewhere with other people to a restaurant she doesn't know. Then if she gets invited to a non-vegan friend's house for supper she brings her own food just in case.

At least she knows when she comes to me and our mom she can relax a bit because I understand what she can and can't eat. I know to check the back of every food before buying it for her. It is amazing to see how many products do have animal byproducts in them!

And so many people think that vegan's hardly eat anything and that the food must be tasteless and boring, but geez you should see the delicious meals my sister makes! When I go stay with her with my kids I am perfectly happy to be vegan during my stay. And my kids don't even notice that they are "missing" something.

Yes I also love working all around the house. On Monday I sent my laptop in for repairs so I am stuck to my office desk now working on my pc. I miss being more mobile and it has only been 2 days!

I can just imagine I would never be able to work from an office again being stuck to one spot.

That's lovely. I used to work with my sister and I really enjoyed it. We now both each work from home and we sometimes do work for each other. She built one of my websites for me and I will soon be doing some content writing for her for a new website she is busy with.

Oh yes, I wish I had the option of having my very own office. Unfortunately I cannot as it is not feasible to devote a room for that only. So I work in the kitchen/living area among all the noise Where is your office space? But if I were to buy a new house I would surely consider it. Explain to your hubby that it is important to work in peace and quiet as you get to concentrate more and be more efficient. In the case you will not use it anymore, it can still be used as a study room for your kids when they grow older.

Yes and I can't see how having my pc in an open area in the house will be beneficial to the well-being of my equipment! My kids know they are not allowed to touch my laptop, phone and pc... which makes all my equipment the things they just long to touch. As soon as I turn my back they are trying to get upstairs to check out my office.

Imagine my pc was sitting in the lounge? OMG no thank you. It would be broken within minutes!

My office is anywhere I want to be. However, it depends on if I have programming to do, or if I'm just doing other work. I own two computers, a dasktop, and a laptop. I find it's easier for me to program on the desktop, than it is to program on the laptop. The area that my desktop is in, is a make shift office space, and this space is very small. However, with the laptop I have the option to be anywhere I want as long as there is a power source next to me as the laptop battery is completely dead and needs to be replaced.

I also like to find areas that are comfortable for me, such as not many people around, less noise, and the areas have to be bright because of my bad vision. I will get headaches if I can't see because it's too dim, so that's always an annoying factor. Right now my office space is on my couch, in my living room.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Lynne
Oh yes, my office space is also often on my couch Where is your office space? Right now with the cold my favorite spot is my bed!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Everett
Are you sick with a cold, or are you cold in bed? I'm glad im not the only person who sits down at their couch to work.. I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to, it's awfully comfortable and convenient. Where is your office space?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Lynne
Fortunately I am not sick with a cold Where is your office space? I mean winter is setting in and it is cold so the best place for me is in bed where it is warmest. Comfy and warm, it beats the couch in winter by a long shot.

Everett
Oh, haha. Thought you meant you were sick with a cold in bed working, and that was your office.

Less noise or more likely no noise is my desired place to work. When I was younger, I prefer to study at dawn when everyone is asleep and there is peace and quiet at home. But now, I cannot work at those hours. It's a good thing that people at home understand my work that they give me peace when I am in the computer table.

Hi Lynne thank for show your interest to know about office where it is for several reason. I am working as freelancer you may know over some years and first couple of years I completely work in home and for several reason. For example less work, I was single etc. But last 5 years am bearing a office and near to my home, it is just 30 minutes walking distance and my office located prime business area in our city. And I am working very peace an silent circumstance in my office and very near of my office has a tea stall too. Now I can contrast what is different between home and office as doing freelancing job. I can concentrate perfectly in office and can maintain schedule for work, which you cannot maintain in home, because there has so many family activity concern.

Thanks by Ajlancer

Hi Ajlancer. Yeah I know exactly what you mean by the distractions working at home. It is tough for me in the afternoons with having a 2 year old and a 4 year old at home, so there is very little work done then.

However I am a very disciplined person and I really want to try and be a stay at home mom and a working mom. I work for 3 - 4 hours in the morning while the kids are at playschool, then I sometimes manage another 1-2 hours in the afternoon when my 2 year old sleeps. Then I work again for a few hours in the evening after my kids have gone to bed.

Yes I work in little bits and pieces but I am managing.

That's remarkably wonderful. It's insanely hard to be a parent, especially if you have really young ones, and working online. I can imagine all the toys that fly over your head when you're working from home, LOL. I have to ask though, do your children help with blog posts or other content? Sometimes children often at times bring up some wild crazy stuff, do you get ideas from them?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Lynne
Oh and a really cool thing we have done a lot of is Kids Activities posts... so making cool stuff with things you usually have on hand at home. Like mixing one can of shaving cream with one packet of bicarb of soda and making "snow",..... you can also chuck vinegar over that and it fizzes and makes a noise... chuck in some food coloring too. Lots of mess and lots of fun too.

We done slime, playdough, paint, foam bath paint, foam dough, bath bombs, color chalk, slime, bouncy balls.... so I make these things with my kids and I take pictures of them mixing everything up.

Yes totally! I have a mommy blog so I have written many posts inspired by them from my surprise pregnancies, to how my pregnancy was like, my birth experiences...

My daughter also featured in a Youtube video a few weeks ago... I picked her up from school and the teacher was all apologetic about her getting Prestik (Blu Tack) stuck in her hair... and I was like yeah awesome, great job! The teacher looked at me a little strangely.

Got home, got my laptop out and filmed a video on how to remove Prestik with Baby Oil Where is your office space?

And then of course there are those tough days. I don't think I need to explain do I?

Hi Lynne I understand your hard working. And I know you are busy and disciplined person either how you manage all works beside family. Specially when you are mom for 2 kids, it is really hard to manage all time to time. I have also a son and now he is 19 months. My wife also doing as part time freelancing now after having a baby. Though she was doing job as full time. She also trying hard to manage all. I can feel your hard working. I can not support my wife such way due to my mass job. B,ut I know as a mom how she need to do each and every day. You are doing superb which you tell as time to time schedule. I appreciate all moms.

As of right now, I am working from home. Although, very soon I will have my own space outside of the house, as sometimes it can get a little crazy here with 3 children and a dog which makes very hard to concentrate at times. Having your own space in your house would definitely be beneficial so you have a set place to go to for work and then the rest of your house for your family time! When my wife and I are working, our children are pretty good about leaving us be, but if one is working the other is tending to the children!!! LOL

Oh I can't wait until my kids let me work a bit more when they are home. Sometimes I just have to get something urgent done and it is often completely impossible. When they are bigger it will be easier I am sure! They are 2 and 4 now, so they need quite close supervision or they get up to all sorts Where is your office space?

My bedroom is my working space. Since my bedroom is the most private space in my home, I like working in my bedroom. I also have set up a study in my bedroom, since I also do offline research, I have set up a library in my bedroom. However, I am thinking to shift my working space, MY bedroom is getting cluttered and everything looks crammed. Hopefully in a separate room, I will have better working condition.
