Let's say you pay for a year in advance and your host company doesn't give you credit or goes out of business before your hosting is up. What can you do to recoup your money? Is this a scam or simply inevitable? Also, what other kinds of host scams have you encountered and from which host company?
If that company is not renowned in anyway, chances are very less, for getting anything back.Make sure you read reviews, ask about current or previous customers or any testimonials of that company, before purchasing, next time

It is a scam if it is in a habit of getting closed after getting several signups.
It is difficult to avoid these if every time they come up with a different company name.
One thing that can be done is go for hosts that have been around for years.

if you have paid already, just request for a money chargeback or refund from the credit company that initiated the payment. that is why its good to always research all round the site before dealing on any payment with them.

There are many scammers pretending to be hosting companies all over the internet. These type of websites must be reported to the FBI and you can charge a payback on Paypal for such transactions. You must first check the reviews of such hosting companies and only then buy the hosting.

You can write a review on some of the sites which have the hosting review option. You can also write blog post and explain your bad experience. You can avoid your friends from purchasing their products. And apart from that you can't really do much. Because at the end other people choose what fits them. You can see that there are people who buy the hosting from the bluehost and hostgator despite having lot of bad reviews. So it just makes you think we can't do much about it.
