What is the proper length for a domain name?

What's the maximum number of characters that a domain name should be? Is there a perfect length for domain names?

For instance, if I wanted to start an online book store, could I include four words such as 'myonlinebookstore' or would that be considered too long?

Shorter domain names are easier to brand in memory but also harder to obtain. Just go with your intuition on this situation. If you want to include all your words in the domain, then you should, especially if it means you can use your chosen keywords.

Include your product or site name plus a main keyword if possible. That way your actual site and domain name will match.

I prefer short domain name, something people will easily remember.

I think no domain name should more than 20 letters in it.

Hello,

I'm with you on this one. It's a pain sometimes to type out long domains. Everyone is trying to pick up short domains these days and they have gotten to be very rare.. even 4 letter ones. What is the proper length for a domain name?

Best Regards,
Everett

Hi,

There really is no perfect domain length in my opinion. There are so many different types of websites that require different types of names.

If you're simply going for something that is most memorable you would probably want 4-7 characters that is one word and very unique but easy to remember. Then again as you're a book store you're unlikely to want a one word unique name and would be more suited with bookstore or similar being in the domain name. Though it may be less memorable/brandable it will still be a better domain name for that type of website, regardless of being longer. You still don't want it being so long that it becomes hard to remember/a hassle to type but you should be able to judge this yourself pretty easily.

Cheers,
Karoshio

That's a very good point, considering the nature of the site, you would want to identify what is being sold on site such as books to anyone looking at the domain name link.

How would you get a four letter domain now? I am sure all of them would be taken.

A very short nonsense name will not be easy to remember. Neither will an overly long name. Aim for a moderately long keyword title that only uses two of your main keywords rather than something which is too long.

I've seen very few non sense type domains in the past few years. Maybe a mixture of three or four letters would be a popular domain name to own, but highly unlikely available as most are already owned by big companies who snapped them up years ago.

One of two word domain name is considered a good domain name. If a domain name is short, it is easy to remember. easy to remember and catchy domain names always excels. However, these days it is really hard to find one or two word domain name. Therefore you will have to consider using extensions. For example if want make money to be your domain, you will find that makemoney dot come is already taken, you will have to consider other extension such as club, online, xyz etc.
