Does anyone still use directory submissions?

Directory submissions were very popular in the early and mid 2000's. But many of the sites I see now are asking large fees and they are not ranked very highly. So I don't know if it's worthwhile. Is link submission to a free or paid directory still a viable option for link building?

I do it but not like it was used when it was popular! I use blog directory; it is not simple a back link. I get my latest post displayed in my profile or i can promote my posts! It is the case of Blog Engage, Technorati, All Top!

Yes, you can look for dofollow quality directories, also look for the last cache, last approved listing in the particular directory then only submit in that.

Thanks

Perhaps those people still using it would like to tell us where it appears in their pecking order of activities - is it the third or fourth thing they do to get backlinks or is it a lot lower in importance.

The best way to let the search engine know what keywords your targeting is through contextual links. Directory submission are cool but I would focus my attention on building link text.
