Where do you get good backlinks for your forum?

What are the best sites to get backlinks for a forum from? For instance, if you are trying to do SEO for your forum, where would you leave links? If you wanted direct traffic and new members, where would you put out links?

Obviously, you can get backlinks from other related forums. Just be sure you have permission to advertise first before using a signature line. Most times, if you contribute to the forum, a signature line is allowed.

Depends on what niche your forum is. For instance, with general chat forums, most new members are by referral only. It's very difficult to backlink for those forums. For more specialized forums, you can get new members by leaving forum signatures as suggested or advertising on forums that allow advertising.

Any social networking site or web 2.0 site such as Hubpages is a good place to leave a relevant link.

You could get a backlink from a big forum directory that lists niche forums like yours.

One advice from a discussion that I had read was the spreading of backlinks in social media networks. If you have a Twitter account, use it to tweet about your website. You can tweet once or twice a week but not the same tweet. Likewise in Facebook, you can also post about your website but don’t do it often because your friends may be annoyed and you may be tagged a spammer.
