See it depend on how many quality backlinks you have.
If you are having backlinks for high PR 6+ website on home page then you just need to have around 50 backlinks.

Yes, it is not about amount of backlinks, but QUALITY of them. I've ranked sites with only 3 or 4 good backlinks. You don't need 1000's of them.

but also don't forget that you must have few no-follow back-links as well to make your site look real and natural. and also you must go for page domain backlinks mostly and few root domain backlinks. also the webpage must have low outbound links.

No one can say you how many backlinks you need for a site to rank but one thing clear quality back link is more required than quantity.

Things have changed now on Google. All the backlinks are not counted. Only links coming from quality site is counted.

Also, it is suggested not to make too many backlinks as your site will be considered as spamming the use of backlinks. This may be a problem for the promotion of your site on search engines.

It totally depends on the niche in which you are working . plus competition of KW ... Relevant and High PR links from few sites can increase your rating instead of hundreds of links from irrelevant sites ...

Can you clarify what you mean by a particular site? Are you referring to your site or are you referring to one site where you can post your backlinks? Anyway, if you mean 1 site that you want to post your backlinks, search engines consider just 1 backlink for every site. Now if you mean the number of backlinks that you can do for your site then you can start by doing 50 backlinks on 50 sites and do it again for another 50 of the same.
