Is Google invading your privacy?

And, how do you feel about being tracked over numerous sites as you use various Google products? Such as having your searches saved/analyzed?

In some ways, Google's tracking policy, is a time saver as it saves important information about my searches/site preferences and uses those over multiple sites, at least when i'm signed in for a Google username. But also, it feels like an invasion of privacy.

For instance, just today, Google displayed this message during a search for a site, "Last visit: 6/5/12"

In some situations, that might not be a good thing, having the information displayed, especially if you are sharing your computer. You might not want others to know what you are searching for.

What are your thoughts? Is Google invading our privacy or helping us?

From what i've heard, Google can be compelled to turn over private information (such as search history) on an individual with a court order. Wonder if that would influence people not to use Google if they knew it.

Even if Google is keeping a record of the history of a user’s transactions in Google products I don’t think it can be a reason for people to stop using Google. If you remember December of last year when the hacking of Facebook surfaced in the news? There was a sort of scare but it did not intimidate the users of Facebook albeit the users grew in number. With Google as a giant I don’t think people will be affected by issues such as the privacy issue in this discussion.

If you are that scared, use a different browser when searching. Or log-out of Google when doing so, so that your search won't be saved.

Supposedly you can use a private option when using Chrome or Firefox that doesn't store tracking information. But that doesn't mean Google search engines isn't tracking you.

Private option? Where can I see that?

It's usually very easy, just check your toolbar for that option.

Read more about it here.

Some people are paranoid about their privacy. Just yesterday, a friend said that she had made a mistake by posting a photo on Facebook with a privacy for herself only which means the post can only be seen by her. That’s how she values her privacy, not wanting others to see some of her posts. I’m sure she will freak out when she knows that Google is keeping track of her searches. But for me, it is Google’s right to keep whatever information it wants from us since we are using its facilities for free.
