What should you do if you are being blackmailed by a customer?

One of my customers claims to have some information on me that would ruin my reputation with others, even my family. This is information from my past and likely could do damage if he really does have proof. He is threatening to use it against me if I don't perform certain work for free. I am not sure what to do now.

Any threats made of blackmail are considered criminal, even when made online. Contact your local authorities for information on how to proceed. Depending on where you are located, there should be an institution similar to the FBI that would investigate these threats. If this person is located in another country, they might be able to help you submit this information to the blackmailer's ISP and that person could end up being taken offline.

If you are working with a site such as SEOClerks, you should report this buyer and he will be banned. If you are working alone, break contact with him. If you need, you can get a restraining order against this person.

Make an assessment as to how much damage this information could really cause you if he goes through with his threat. It might not be as bad as you think. Is this something you could end up in jail over, or would it just mean embarrassment in front of your friends and family? Block this person from your life at every avenue, especially Facebook. Be sure that no one can see your friend's list so he can't get the names of those peSople in your life he could use to target.

If you give in to blackmail or threats, he could still use the information against you. What's to stop this person? Just stand your ground. Report him to authorities, police or the site you work with and let it go.
