Is it a good idea to start a general chat forum?

I want to start a general forum about various topics but my friend says this is a mistake. Why shouldn't I start a general forum of my own?

General chat forums rely on the friendship factor. If you are not ready to be on site daily and friendly to all, willing to listen, you are not likely to make this type of forum work. Though there are many successful general chat forums around.

Does anyone actually join general chat forums nowadays? It's just so much easier to post on Facebook or talk to friends on other social networks.

You would have to separate quite some time in order to build it up. We are not talking about posting only, you would actually have to advertise big & smart.

Chat forums are fun but hard to start up or grow as so many competing chat forums to compete with.

I like to chat so I do think that this is a good idea. I do not mind general chat forums.

And, you would prefer this over Facebook?

It's not a mistake if you love the chat forum niche and want to start one of your own. Those are the only requirements for forum ownership.

You should listen to your heart and go with what would make you happiest.

What is your marketing plan for this forum? Do you have a built in base of friends to come to your forum or know others from forums that would be regular members? If so, then you should pursue this dream.

General chat is a good niche for someone who just likes to talk a lot on various subjects not just one. But you will have a lot of competition in this.

Just like any forum with a niche, a general chat forum would need a good kickoff from your support group. If you don't have a support group, well, don't expect walk-ins because that would disappoint you. Just a lesson to learn, take the case of Pinoycentral which is a general chat forum that is the largest in the Philippines. That was the time when forums were not yet in fashion. I had checked Pinoycentral a while ago and it's not existent anymore. I guess it has been overtaken by the multitude of forums in the internet that keeps growing in numbers everyday. So it is better to have a niche forum instead of a general chat that may not survive.

I don't think it a bad or wrong idea to begin a general chat forum.it not about the forum itself but how spicy is the place.A lot of people needs where they can really chat and express themselves, so I don't think this will not go well.Follow your ideas and passion that is the only way you can make a success of it.
