How to encourage more posts from each forum member

What techniques do you use to encourage more new forum posts from members? Do you offer prizes or encouragement? What are your methods?

It would not be a bad idea to offer a periodic surprise gift to a very active poster. Though I would not make posting contingent on prizes. Good behavior also counts.

If your forum members are not really motivated to make posts or create threads, then no amount of prizes will work. Get new members who actually love your forum and want to contribute content, rather than begging or bribing the forum members you already have.

People like being part of fun discussions. Just start more discussions that evoke interest and you will get engagement.

A thread contest can motivate members to make new posts but it's not a guarantee. Member titles can also be a motivating factor likewise with trophies and medals. But the best reason for posting is interest. For me, there are boards that get my interest and sometimes even the off topic becomes interesting to me depending on the contents.

I think posting contests and rewards would encourage people to post. Putting up prizes or rewards like T-shirts for people who've reached a certain number of posts in my experience is a good motivator.
