    Should you take your forum offline if it is attacked?

    If your forum gets DDOS or attacked by hackers, should you take it offline so it is inaccessible to members?

    You will want to be careful with your site if it's being attacked by hackers. They can easily inject spam or spyware into your site which will then download onto people's computers. Contact your host immediately and explain the situation and ask them to take your site offline if you are unable to do so for yourself.

    I would take it off and work on fixing it and making it better so that hackers can not do that again.

    You might have a legal requirement to take the site offline as any damage caused to someone's computer while visiting your site could be seen as negligence in a court of law, especially if you knew the site was infected and did nothing to stop people from visiting your site.

    Taking the site down during a DDOS attack will most likely cause the attack to stop as the hacker believes they have succeeded with their aim. Then you can work to improve your site security, so the attack does not happen again when you put the site back online.

    It is imperative to shut down your forum when there is a technical issue. That happened several times to the forum of my husband’s office website. The attack occurred 3 days in succession so the forum was like in an up and down condition. It looked like someone was injecting the site with a virus. But after containing the attack, it never occurred anymore. Early this year, I have been experiencing the intermittent shutdown of some forums. But it doesn’t look like being attacked, more likely it’s a technical problem related to the migration to a new platform. In one forum, some of my posts were deleted as per the message of the admin, requesting me to post again.
