Part time moderators

Most people have jobs and family responsibilities, so it's not possible to be on forum night and day.

So how often does a moderator need to be active, especially one who is not paid? For instance, if your moderator only comes by on weekends, would you consider that to be inactive or simply part time?

Most likely, these staff members are just volunteer, so any time spent on the forum is work done for free. For that reason, there is no way to guarantee when someone will be available. You should have more than one moderator who can come to your forum if others are absent.

To guarantee a full time presence of a moderator, you could consider paying them. That would give your site top priority over whatever else they are doing now.

I am very interested in this thread because I got 3 invitations to become a volunteer moderator. Although I am busy with my daytime job in the office, I am thinking of offering my service for the sake of generosity because I understand that those forum owners who invited me don't have the capability to spend for their new forum. However, I don't want to disappoint them by taking on the hat of a moderator and later on would abandon my position when my work schedule becomes hectic. But I guess a volunteer moderator is not expected to be very serious and dedicated to the task.
