Google only crawls your site so many levels deep, you can increase deep crawling by linking to the deeper parts of your site from your homepage or from other pages like your categories. Where as without them, in order to get to something like 5 pages deep, someone would have to click on the 1st page link, then click on page 2, then page 3, page 4 and page 5 and so on to get to that page. By having a drop down menu which has links to all your pages of your site including the really deep inner pages, Google can better deep crawl and index your site. Are dropdown menus bad for SEO?

But some drop down menus are just ridiculously long and clunky and badly styled and not responsive and often have broken links or don't work right on all browsers or are too large or not large enough. There are many design woes and implications to using drop down menus in your header. Although they can certainly aid navigation and usability of your site with people and benefit you from an SEO perspective, you need to get them just right for your site, optimized and validated and made sure it works in any browser or screen size perfectly.

I am just going to say no, no it is not. Look how commonly used they are I mean this website that is the home of thousands and thousands of SEO services uses drop down menus as seen above.

Tiny things like that are not something to worry about when it comes to SEO because if you do you'll just slow yourself down,

I am not entirely sure but I think that if the URLs linked to by the drop down items are visible in the code then Google will follow them so it should not be a problem.

I have read in one discussion that the design of the website has nothing to do with the SEO of the site because search engine optimization is based on the methods like the content, backlinks and keywords but that doesn’t include the design particularly the menu whether it is a drop down or not. Maybe we are overdoing the concern with SEO that we are thinking of other things that we think can affect SEO.
