The true cost of bad marketing and branding

We all know that we need to do some marketing and branding in order to have a successful website, but we never think about what can go wrong if we screw it up.  A lot of people don't know what they're doing when it comes to marketing and branding, and they will actually go down the wrong path and hurt their own image online.  Now, this isn't a huge deal if you're not a multi-billion dollar corporation, but it will do damage regardless of your income.  The more money you earn online or offline, the more you'll put into marketing and branding, which means the quicker it could go bad and blow up in your face.  This is why I always recommend to companies that they start slowly with their marketing and branding at least until they know what they are doing, so they don't screw anything up.

Marketing isn't the easiest thing to do for your website and branding is even more difficult.  They aren't hard because of what you have to do, they're hard because of how easily you can screw them up and hurt your own image along the way.  So, in this discussion, I'll be going over outcomes of a bad marketing or branding campaign and you'll see why you should hire a company to do these for your or research everything prior to jumping in yourself.

Bad branding will kill your profits
Branding is known to be difficult to do, but it really isn't, you just need to know what you're doing.  If you do it all wrong, and actually hurt your image, you will notice your profits dropping and we all know that's not a good thing.  Your business relies on your profits, unless your a business that has an angel investor, so you'll need to protect your image as much as possible to keep your profits high.

Bad branding can come quick and hurt you even quicker.  Think about it, how often do you think a company is on top of their damage control every second of the day?  If you said "Not very often!" you're completely right, sort of, because most corporations will catch on to bad PR in the media or online and start to put out the flames.  Usually, the flames can be put out quickly, but if you're a smaller company you might not notice the fire growing and by the time you do it's too late.

Branding and online marketing follows you
Whatever you say about your website or business will follow you through the years.  This can be a good thing or a very bad thing, so you'll need to be careful what you say and do prior to actually doing it.  Your comments and fights online will follow you around, like an angry puppy that bites people who get too close lol.

You could have been a different person 10 years ago, and run the same website, but people online don't care about any of that because they won't usually look at dates on a post when they research you or your business.  You could literally have posted something negative when you put up your website XX years ago and it will follow you around in the SERPs for people to find before they make a purchasing decision or change their mind about even contacting you.

You might have to start over
One of the worst things about bad branding or marketing is that you could have to start over from scratch.  You might hurt your websites own image so much that no one will want to purchase from you, or even go to your website.  If your traffic and sales tank and your SEO is top notch, you're likely being hurt by your branding and how you did your marketing.  You will have to start over, which isn't the worst thing in the world because it's just a website name you have to change, but it's still a lot of work transferring all the code and doing the optimization again to get back to where you originally were.

You could hurt your own image, not just your business image
When branding and marketing go wrong, it could hurt your own personal image and not just your business image, which is a career killer.  Your branding might go the route of Papa Johns and hurt the image of your CEO, as well as the image of your business itself, and you could see a dramatic drop in sales because of it.  If you're seen in a bad light, by the masses, you will hurt everything you touch and not just the one business you're currently with.

In conclusion
Branding and marketing should never be approached like they're an easy thing to do, even if they are because you could screw it up fairly quickly.  It's easy to do, but even easier to mess up, and that is why I suggest you read everything you can and take it slow, or just outsource the work to a credible freelancer or agency that can do everything for you and keep you in a positive light with the search engines as well as your visitors The true cost of bad marketing and branding

Thanks for the beautiful article. You said true. One time bad remarks is enough for life time work. Once I had received a bad remarks on my first username and later I have changed the username and now I am doing work with the new username. I have faced a huge trouble for my old username. But currently I am getting huge facility with my new username. So bad branding can make any one huge trouble.

Thanks
Centurion

Sometimes I also have a problem with my username because they do not know if it is my nickname or surname. There was one forum that I went to where one member pointed out that my username was unpleasant to the eyes. I don’t have an issue with the username of others even if they look weird. Mine is actually coined from my real names so I guess you just have to live with it.

Nice article once again, I appreciate the steep effort you put into doing these amazing content about marketing. Just as it's called bad marketing, there is no way something that is done bad would end up or turn up yielding something positive. It's said that you aren't supposed to be expecting a different result from repeating the same thing over and over again. Bad marketing would always kills you business and disrupt your profits no matter how much you try to deny it.

I am with you here. I really appreciate the efforts that were made for this forum and the ideas that were thrown that can help other writers. I also like the idea of taking things slow. It is because doing things the fast way or easy way can bring trouble in the long run.

People underestimate how important the right brand name or company name really is. It has to not only fit your business, but also have a certain ring to it. That will attract customers, visitors and potential partners as well.

Underestimating is sometimes due to some of the business owners not seeking counseling advise, which is very important, that's why so many of them make a wrong choice with both branding and marketing. Some lack true and sincere business partners either because they aren't skilled too or because they were greedy to pay for an expert, cheap is never neat.

Agreed, but doing your own research is also a must. If you're going to excel at something, you should read up on it as much as possible. So you can succeed and take the necessary steps to get better, on your own. Instead of waiting around for someone to advise you in the next course of action. You became your own boss for a reason, after all.

Just as the saying goes anything you lay your hands in always do it well, some business owners feels business is only about putting the product out for people then the money start coming, they don't know it takes more than that. Bad marketing and branding will collapse the business entirely and it won't bring any reasonable profits to the owners like you said, that's why it is good to keep both branding and marketing in an accurate way so to not venture to a dead business end.

This reminds me of a tv commercial of kfc. Yeah, you read it right, it is Kentucky Fried Chicken that launched a new product. There was this guy who was salivating when he was handed his order. And there comes another guy, presumably his friend, who asked to be shared with the food. The first guy spat on his food then offered it to his friend. That’s yucky, right? And do you think it did good to the brand? Oh well, the brand was ruined by that silly advertisement.

That's so funny. I mean, as a viewer and someone who read about it just now, I find it hilarious. That a brand as famous as that would do something like this.

Wow! I'm surprised by their lack of proper judgment before choosing to air this commercial. Also, the way you wrote this is something I'd consider good comedy. This is a great example of why a brand has to carefully weigh in their decisions especially, when it comes to their own image.

I think what we post on internet sticks. So one should be really careful about how to handle the customers. Because they can make things a bit harder for others. And so in such case never argue with the clients. And make sure to get things properly done with the customer feedback. And that way one can easily adjust with the earning from the branding too. Yelp is another good source for handling the marketing.

You know, any time I think of bad marketing and branding, my mind instantly defaults to when big name companies try to cash in on trends. Examples of these sorts of situations can easily be found if you just look through the social media accounts of many big companies. A lot of the time their marketing teams are incredibly out of touch with memes and internet culture, yet still try to shoehorn their way in there in order to appeal to a younger demographic. Usually it just ends up being cringey and their attempts are laughed at by the internet community.

No one does bad marketing and branding intentionally, however, the truth is people are less informed regarding marketing and branding. In order to get the most from your marketing and branding campaign, you have to reach the right people. If you are selling books, you have to reach people who are interested in reading, there is no point in marketing your products to the people who are interested in gaming.

Some people also want to take shortcuts. They believe branding doesn't require genuine building, so they take their product and stick it on as many places as possible. Flying all over the place, spamming their links and name wherever they can. That brings more enemies than friends. Targeted marketing is the key.

That's true. there are many people who look for shortcuts. They believe having their products advertised here there and everywhere will drive sales. However, the truth is just oppositive, people will click ads only when it is related to the topic. having your book about relationship advertised on a forum about Minecraft will not help you.

Agreed. Another important thing to factor in is building relationships. Striking up a connection with people in your niche, will go farther in terms of branding and marketing as opposed to just being a paying customer.

The right way of marketing is targeting the right customers. If you have a game related product, you will have to market to the people who are interested in games, if you promote your game niche website to the people who are not into gaming, you will not get any conversion.

True. Cross promotion can work at times though. But even then, it has to be well-orchestrated.

Webmaster forums can be a good platform for marketing. If you check the user's website, he is likely to return you a favor. I have tried this method and it works. Even on social media, if you check some's blog and leave comments, there will be reciprocation.

This is very true. I know a group of people who frequent the social media site Tumblr and use this method to gain traction with their articles and blog posts.

I have been on facebook groups where the members post their works and check at least 5 links and leave comments. Your work will be reciprocated. BY participating on this kind of exchange, I was able to generate traffic and comments. However, I left because it was very tiring (you had tyo check other's blogs)

I belong to very few Facebook groups. I don't know, it's just never been an exciting and interesting thing to me except on very rare occasions.

I think everything you have discussed on here is very true. We need to always be aware of the image we are projecting online. It is just one of the things that we need to take into consideration. I think we always have to be aware of how we present ourselves.

The way that we project ourselves is always something that matters. Branding goes hand in hand with marketing and when we can be able to do it right, I believe that we are going to achieve amazing success at the end of the day. I have always let people know that your brand is you as people don't patronize you as a result of who you are, but simply because how you run the brand.

It is always necessary that we have some deep thinking before we go into any marketing plan. I have come to notice that the type of marketing that we do is one that is going to stay with us for a whole lot of years since this is what brought some initial clients to us. So, there is always that need to ensure that we do it in a way that it is not going to affect us at the end of the day. Hiring some top marketers in our industry won't be a bad choice as well.

Bad marketing and branding are bad for the product Because the buyers won't be interested in the product if the ads are not so satisfying and not eye-catching, so the customer will just find another product that has a good marketing strategy.
