Apple is Deliberately Slowing Down Old iPhones

The iPhone X and iPhone 8 has recently launched and Apple is set to earn billions of dollars in revenue from its new line of phones. These new iPhones definitely are better than their predecessors but are also a lot more expensive. Take the iPhone X for instance and its $1,000 price tag.

Despite the extremely costly price, people still are very keen on purchasing an iPhone to upgrade from their existing Apple device. There are a number of reasons why and one of them is because their existing iPhone is already too damn slow. And you know why your device is slower than when you first got your iPhone? It's because Apple did that on purpose.

Did you upgrade to the latest iOS? Did you notice that your apps open slower than they used to? That your device is lagging more than ever? A Harvard study says that Apple is the culprit. Before updating to the newest iOS version, think twice.

It's sad that they have to do that so the users will be forced to buy the new one. They should have just retained the fast and good quality of the phone, so that the user can just give it to a son or daughter then buy himself the new iPhone X or 8.
Somehow, users gets tired of having an old phone when a new one comes out of the market. He would want also to be at par with others who will be buying that also.
ANyway, people really save for that.

This is one of those compelling market strategy used by some companies especially if they have loyal customers.

You wouldn't blame apple,they need to make money. Of course their kind of phone is for the rich and the know people they target can still afford the new iPhone 8but might not want to buy.So to make them buy they will have to render the previous one almost useless and that's what they've done.

I think Apple is overselling their parts. And the thing about the Apple is that they need to reduce the cost. Making people buy the new phone every year does not seem to be a good strategy. And you should be investing into this type of the phones as well. I have noticed that Apple has the good price when it comes quality of the build. But overall it is good enough on many points. The type of the stuff with the apple is that they do not seem to be working much on the promotion now. And Android and Windows based phones are doing lot better on that point.

Pardon me for my skepticism because I don't easily believe such negative statements of a product. There was a similar accusation with the DOS operating system used in the IBM PC-XT in the olden times when the newer PC-AT came out in the market. Rumors said that Microsoft deliberately made the old OS become slower so users will upgrade to the new hardware where Microsoft earns a commission. With the iPhone, I wonder why the old units will become slow. I don't see the logic of manufacturing a phone that will slow down in the years to come. Apple can be sued for that.... if you can prove that allegation.

If this is true, what a poor way to treat one's customers. Also, how valid is the Harvard study and how biased was it possibly? I am not a big Apple fan in the first place, but if I knew this policy to be true, I would be even less of a fan. I am totally satisfied with my Android, and with the great customer service I get from my provider. Don't get me wrong--I intrinsically do not trust any major corporate entity, much less cell phone companies, but so far I have not run into issues, that I am aware of, like the one this forum brings up about Apple.

I've always been weary of updates, whether it's apple or another company, because I thought it was just a trick in order to make my phone's performance suck in order to bring me in and get an upgrade.

Looks like my suspicion might have been correct! lol

I think it's pretty ridiculous that a damn cell phone is $1,000. Another thing that is ridiculous is that people will actually pay that much for a dumb phone! My phone is 4 years old and that means it's ancient lol. But if it isn't broke, don't fix it right? I think I paid around $400 for my phone and it's lasted me 4 years. I wonder how long these iPhone X (or whatever they're called) will last. Will they be outdated in a year or two or will they last more than a few years? I guess we won't really know until their newest iPhone comes out and cost $25,000 a month lmao

There was some guy on Twitter that was actually complaining about this and I thought, it has to be true because it definitely sounds like something that Apple would do to try and increase their sales and revenue. I think the best thing to do is to avoid these big software updates if you have an iPhone that isn't the latest one especially if it is a few models behind in terms of the lates.

My friend its not just apple, all companies do that. Its corporate greed and that's how businesses stay in business. I know a engineer at a auto company I am not going to say which one. But they engineer auto parts to break after so many miles. And if it doesn't break after so many miles they tell them to go back to the drawing board and make it break after so many miles. ANd if manufactures didn't resort to these practices then the companies would go out of business.

I still do not see the hype going around Appl and their iPhone. I mean, using Android phones have served me well for all these while and I never have the feeling to get an iPhone. Just maybe there is something special in Apple phones that make them go that costly.

I have never really used an iPhone and so I can't really comment about the performance of the phone. It is not fair for Apple to do this. The previous iPhones were not really that cheap too. I remember that my friend bought an iPhone 7 last year for about $800 I think. Apple products are really expensive over here. There are many people who just follow the trend and as soon as a new phone released they have to buy it. Furthermore, if Apple is deliberately slowing down those old iPhones then people will be tempted to buy a new one.

The fact is this is the case with most gadgets nowadays. It's actually across the board. Even with Android, you can only upgrade to a certain version which depends on the age of your phone. Even Microsoft with their Windows OS has the upgrade issue. If it is they this action is deliberate then this is a major conspiracy which is being used by the tech giants to secure their markets through forceful invasive means. This almost sounds like a movie in the making, perhaps "The Firm part 2 or The Accountant Second Fury!" Nevertheless technology ages and upgrades are inevitable. Some gadgets will go obsolete and some will be 'frankengagetized' or rooted and reprogrammed at the users own risk. One way or the other there will always be options available.

I see that there are mixed reactions regarding this topic. Yes, it hasn't been proved but based on studies and user experience, updates caused numerous Apple products to slow down, my iPad mini included.

It's a different case when it comes to PC and the windows operating system. When you upgrade to the latest OS and you find that it doesn't suit your needs, you can easily downgrade to the previous version. But for the iPhone, you can update your iOS version but you can never go back.

I don't mess with Apple and their iPhones. I am a smartphone guy. Samsung or droid. My biggest issue with the iPhone is with each new model, they take away more and more of the things that made earlier models great. Including the headphone slot and other applications. Just not worth the money.

I am not an Apple customer for reasons of cost because iPhones are admittedly very expensive. But hearing rumors about the wrongdoing of a big company is downright derogatory that needs an investigation. If you are a Coke drinker, you will know the smear campaign against Coke that it can dissolve the sink when and you can also use Coke to clean the toilet bowl. Those accusations have no proof.
