How to become SEO specialist?

Hi,

A friend of mine, web designer, says that most customers do not understand what SEO's, and they want result immediately. There are specialized courses in SEO? Offering a title that sounds good (SEO Engineer or something), and possibly a degree? (I guess if you have a degree or something, it would be easier to convince "the boss overnight").
Thanks !

Well, no, not really. There are a lot of courses on the web you can try, some of them are free and some of them are paid (go on udemy) but otherwise I never found a credible source that is known by everyone in this industry to offer SEO certificates of some kind.
SEO isn't an exact science. You simply can't measure it. You can be a very good SEO in theory but disastrous in practice, SEO involves a lot of separate skills, like research, content writing, technical SEO skills and strategy building. Few SEOs can do them all, this is why in the future SEO will have a couple different branches of specialization.

There really is no easy way to become an SEO specialist, I have been learning about SEO for quite a few years now and still I find that there is so much I do not already know and that is from self teaching. Doing courses is always a good idea as that way you have the ability to learn from someone who is already a specialist and also speak to them face to face when you are struggling.

It is good to have a degree or something in SEO and being able to go around with a title, with something like that people are more willing to take you on and believe what you have to offer over you just saying you know SEO.

Hello,

There are no formal qualifications required to become an Search Engine Optimization specialist based on my knowledge.

You must have and need to know the very basics objectives?:
  • a genuine interest in SEO and/or digital marketing;
  • interactions on various social media platforms;
  • a commitment to keeping your technical skills and knowledge up to date;
  • a good understanding of search engines;
  • an ability to understand social media platforms and how to use them to distribute content, gain more links and build successful campaigns;
  • understand what customers want, where they search and why they purchase something online;
  • a good understanding of the wider marketing context;
  • excellent communication skills to educate, inform, manipulate and mediate;
  • some experience and knowledge of webhosting.

In my opinion, all you need is the right skills.

In the evening news sometime ago, I had seen the interview with 2 supposed-to-be SEO specialists here. They said that SEO is a growing industry and SEO specialists are needed for that purpose. But I’d say for now, an SEO specialist is self-proclaimed to mean there is not certification of sorts. But in fairness to those SEO specialists, they know what they are doing and I guess they are technically armed with knowledge. And for me to become an SEO specialist, it will take a lot of effort to understand the gamut of SEO methods.
