Explaining the change to your children

When it comes to being a parent we all know that your child relies on you being there at their beck and call which is how it should be however, we all have to work and when it comes to working children can feel like they are not always getting the attention they desire and that can cause problems with their behaviour and them acting out if they don't get the attention they so greatly want.

Working from home as a freelancer means you are there for your child and they can still have you around but mixing the work in with giving them the attention they need can be a problem and it's always best to sit your child down and try to explain to them why you need to work and why you need that time to work. It can be harder to explain the situation and change to a younger child who needs the attention more than an older child.

Being a freelancer myself and having children it's difficult getting them to understand why I have to be on the computer sometimes even more so for my younger children, I try to spread work out so that I can spend time with them and I find that helps but getting them to fully understand that for a few hours a day I do need to be on my PC can sometimes be a task.

What do you find is the best way to deal with the change when it comes to your children? What is the best way to explain it to a child who may not fully understand?

Hello Shortie861
Have a wonderful day.

Thank you very much for the nice question. Its a normal matter that child will ask question if I stay maximum time with computer for doing work about freelancing. At first I have to think that my child has been looking for computer using where I am making a disturb for the child- in that case I have to buy a new laptop or desktop so that child can use the computer and can get enjoy. Secondly I can say the child details and more details about freelancing that we do not need to do any job at outside. I am my own boss and I can earn from online. In this way the child can understand and can give me huge facility to do my personal work. Thirdly I can take the help of child mother and can say her to say details to child so that we can all stay together and I can do my important work on computer.

Thanks
Centurion

The children will always undertand their parents as long as the explanation is clear. When there is a sudden change, it is normal for everyone to be affected. And it is also normal for a child to ask why he is being neglected somehow. The parent should be clear in explaining the new situation and maybe promising something in return is a good tradeoff.

I do this a lot of time when I did to work long hours.I explain in simple terms to them that without the work mum can't buy them toys and chocolate and other things and they understand. At least the allow me concentrate without making noise.

It was easier to explain in my case because I used to be away for long hours when I was still working full time and would be home just before midnight. When I shifted to freelancing at home, my child would see more of me but I had to explain that I have to work on certain hours and can't be disturbed unless it is absolutely necessary. That is definitely much better than not having me around for almost the entire day so my child has been very cooperative.

I also agree that the best solution is to talk with the children. They will understand and they will also look forward to days when you are free. Not talking to them is bad because they will not only assume you don't care, they will also get used to it and even when you are free to spend time with them, they won't feel the difference.
