As I understand it you will need to get a variety of types of links to make it look natural.

The general rule is to try and build niche related links on authority sites. The higher the domain authority and page authority of the website where you get the link the better.

One good quality backlink will work so much better than thousands of low quality links. In fact thousands of low quality links build quickly could land you getting penalized by Google.

Rather go for building high quality links over a period of time.

I think guest posting links hold quite a lot of power if it is a good quality website that you get the guest post on.

Guest posting is also my best bet when it comes to backlinks. But since blogging is my orientation so I will choose a popular blogger’s site to post comments and thereby have my backlinks there. It that blog has a thousand regular readers then even just 5% or 50 of those readers would check on my backlink then that’s already a good number to consider for just 1 comment that I left in that popular blog.

The most effective backlinks are links from sites with the same niche as your own. Let me provide an example:

Say I have a gaming website, and I wanted to build my backlinks. The best places to build backlinks for a gaming website would be on other gaming niche websites. So I would go to google and search "mmo forums", "rpg forums", "rpg blogs" and the like. I would try to get a backlink from those sites. The best kind of backlink would probably, at this point, be from a niche related blog. If you could get a backlink from the same niche as your website, from a blog, then it's basically backlink gold. If you repeat this, then you're good to go. Your backlinks would be powerful. Don't use any spammy websites to gain backlinks, it's never worth it and you're only wasting your time. Furthermore, the more spammy a website is, the less "link juice" it has. If you do go to a blog, and the comment section has hundreds of comments, and they are spammy, don't even think about dropping your link anywhere.

Dofollow backlinks. This is the shortest answer possible.
I can expect a little more by explaining that you need dofollow backlinks from high authority websites and domains but the direct point is the links need to be dofollow for the authority exchange to happen in Google's eyes.

Nofollow backlinks don't transfer any authority and can only increase your traffic, sure such backlinks may not help much with your rankings but they will increase your overall value from Google's perspective so never miss an opportunity on getting backlinks!

Forgot to mention the "dofollow" backlink, in my reply above. The "rel" title annoys me when dropping backlinks. I wish they were all dofollow backlinks! Lol..

People are getting smarter these days and adding this (rel=nofollow) to their links. Almost to the point where if you want excellent backlinks you basically have to fork over cash for guest posting, or a direct link on an authority niche related site.
