Recaptcha it's a free service offered by Google, the function of recaptcha is to block all bots from visiting your website. Captcha it's a very common thing these days, and definitely it's a must for your website, specially if you're worried about suspicious visits that comes from bot softwares.

The best thing about recaptcha it's not that they only will block bot softwares, but it also will help you to get accurate results about your website visitors. Using reCAPTCHA in WordPress blog is very easy and i would recommend it to everyone, specially on contact forms, registration forms or comment system. It really does help a lot to reduce spam bots and spammers from bombing your blog with useless data and wasting your time.

Yeah Google Recaptcha is useful for some reasons, but it's not completely fullproof. There are some bots and software that can get around it. A lot of SEO link building tools for example can get around and bypass Google Recaptcha. Bots can use an OCR tool to convert the image to text. There are many free OCR tools out there that some bots make use of, or they use their own built in OCR tool. Also bots can just get the javascript that's used and then send it to some human somewhere that is working cheap to answer captchas to get it bypassed for you.

There are other ways and means of getting around it and bypassing it as well. The point is, while it can be useful to thwart a lot of spam, it's not 100% fullproof and some bots can get around it and bypass it without much difficulty. See Sorry Google, No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA doesn't stop bots. And the post on Venture Beat that splits it wide open Google’s No Captcha reCaptchas may not be as bot-proof as we thought. Even some Ubot bots can bypass Google Recaptch in less than a minute.

Still, it's better to have it as it does stop a lot of bots. But not all of them. Just so you know.

Well, I didn't said it can't be bypassed, of course they can be bypassed, as anything else captchas too has vulnerability on it, but it's far better having them installed on your site instead of leaving it completely open for any kind of bot. Now as per javascript that depends on you, if you leave it unencrypted then of course it can be bypassed pretty easily, if it's hard encrypted then you don't have to worry about them. In the end, Captcha it's only one of many things that you need to setup a fullproof site against bots.

Thanks for this information about Goolge Recaptcha. I just have a question Procoder. I had problems with my website when I was using a Recaptcha. Often people weren't able to place comments or send in forms.

I have to dig deep into my memory now to remember the error message that was given, I believe it said something about Java settings?

When I removed the Recaptcha that problem was resolved. Spam does get picked up now and is sent to the comment spam section but I don't know how safe it is not having Recaptcha.

Yw Lynne! Since they weren't able to post comments when the plugin was active, it means that probably the plugin was not configured correctly. Recaptcha it's the same thing as many other spam protection plugins, all of them have its cons and pros of course, but they all have the same function to prevent spammers commenting on your site, the main point is to block spammers before spamming, not after they spam.

I have been to sites that are using Recaptcha that I know it is for the purpose of blocking the bots from entering their forum. The simplest Recaptcha that I had encountered was the button that you will click to say you are not a bot. There are others that are more complex like the picture puzzle of 9 portions where you have to click the blocks that has a car or a street sign.
