I can't say which the best is, but I actually like Malwarebytes anti malware. - It's easy, clean and simple to use. And, I personally have been successful with it so far. It's also free to use.

You can find more information about it here:

I use the free version of Avira antivirus, I only recently installed it, for a long time maybe more than 5 years I didn't had any kind of antivirus, but since I started to take my laptop at work with me and my work network had some virus problem I decided maybe it for the best to finally install an antivirus.

Overall if you know your way around online and don't download anything fishy and you visit the same websites over and over, I don't see the point in having an antivirus.

If i was you sir i would use a combination of things. I use Spy bot and Spy Hunter for my main computers. If you have a little bit of money to spend i always send people to AVG they offer a really good all around protection for internet security. The other thing you could do for added security is to buy a firewall. Sonic firewalls are some of the most affordable firewall hardware on the internet today. They are really simple to use and they get the job done. I agree with Cristian if you take necessary precautions while using the web you will be less likely to be infected. When it comes to internet security you can never have enough. I noticed that you are talking about a laptop, something you bring with you around to different places rite? Avoid getting you valuable information stolen on Public WIfi. Pro XPN offers a great VPN service that will help you get away from all of the hackers trying to get your information. I'm agree with procoder, I think that the best antivirus are BitDefender and Kaspersky. You can combine it with an anti-malware software like MalwareBytes Anti-Malware ( as said hitmeasap, the best).

Other great antivirus is ESET Nod32 that has a great performance and low memory consumption.

Also i recommend Comodo Firewall, one of the best firewall which have a lot of features and is free.

I've seemed the people making use of avast and the rest anti-viruses in the market. I think you can get ESET Nod32 and try, I think it is going to be a useful anti-virus for that is what my cousin uses on her laptop as well. However, you always have to bear in mind that you need to pay for their premium services to ensure they give you some kind of special protection.

I bought a new HP laptop in the middle of last year. When I inquired of the license fees for the anti-virus, I had second thoughts. It took me some time before I decided on installing a free anti-virus. Yeah, AVG is the protection for our laptop which looks good because our desktop used to have AVG for its protection when we bought it in 2009. And since we are not going deep down the websites in the internet, the potential viruses are very minimal and can be detected by AVG.
