What is the difference between SEO and SEM? I already know a lot about SEO but have not really heard that much about SEM. What does SEM do? Is SEO a part of the whole SEM process?
SEO and SEM is a part of internet marketing. SEO stands for search engine optimization and SEM stands for search engine marketing. SEO use to on page and off page optimization than SEM use to increase website visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.

I think the SEM or search engine marketing is the advertising that you place on the search engine that can be seen by the searchers. For example your niche is a clothing line that when someone searches for clothing line your site will appear on the right side of the search list because it is advertised there. That means there is an expense involved in SEM unlike in SEO when it is free if you can do it yourself.
SEO means Search engine optimization mostly used to optimize a keyword so that our website will get ranked in search engine where as SEM means search engine marketing mostly used for marketing purpose.
They are both intertwined with each other and they both basically mean the same thing. When you talk of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) you're talking about optimizing your site to rank higher in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). And when you talk of SEM (Search Engine Marketing) you're talking about marketing your site in the search engines by doing SEO on it. So while SEO means things like building links to your site or improving the on-page SEO of it, SEM would involve the same practice of building links to your site in order to improve its ranking in the SERPs as well as forms of advertising which would send more traffic to it. As a webmaster, you will be doing both SEO and SEM as well as SMM (Social Media Marketing) and SMO (Social Media Optimization). Both are terms that loosely mean the same thing.
It looks like SEO is the in thing now and SEM is just being born at least in my knowledge. If we focus on SEO, we can increase the ranking of the website in the search list of the search engines. For SEM, we rely on the ranking of our website for added traffic. What if the website ranking is way below? You probably have to pay someone to do the SEO work in order to increase your website’s ranking and for you to continue with your search engine marketing.
SEO and SEM are part of digital marketing, both take a role in executing your website and getting it in front of the right users in search engine. SEO employs organic strategies whereas SEM employs paid strategies.
