Using a Website Tester on your Website?

I am just wondering whether anyone here has ever used website testing services to check how users interact with your websites?

I am referring to when real people get paid to use your website and to perform tasks that you have set out for them.

Their screen gets recorded while they do this and so do their faces. They also have to speak continuously about their experience while performing these tasks.

I have heard that users know within the first minute whether they are going to stay on your website a little longer or not and this seems like it could be a very valuable way to really see how people react to your website.

I have never used these services before but I have been a user tester and been paid for that, so I am interested to know what the thoughts and experiences are from the other side.

I have been thinking about maybe using these types of services on my websites.

Oh yes I am sure there is a market for it! Have a look at the websites User Testing, and Userlytics. They have a company based on website testing.

Of course the trick would be that the website owners are looking for specific people so things like age, gender, geographic location, language etc count.

Maybe just check out those websites I mentioned for some ideas.

Like I said in my post I would be interested in getting videos like this showing how people like my site, what they struggle with and of course the verbal feedback! Way cool!

Their screen gets recorded while they do this and so do their faces. They also have to speak continuously about their experience while performing these tasks.

So it uses their own webcam to record them while they are browsing/using your site? And they have to speak continuously while they are doing so? So like they have to say something like "I'm clicking on this link now and waiting for the page to load and open. The page has now loaded and opened and I'm now reading what it says on the page" sort of thing?

What sort of pay do these people get for doing that? And who analysis the videos of them after? Is that something you'd have to do yourself or something another company does for you? What if you had 50 people doing it who all recorded an hour of them using your site? Would that mean you'd have to sit through 50 hours of looking at peoples faces and their expressions and reactions while using your site?

I guess that could be kind of useful though. Knowing how people responded and reacted to certain pages or posts on your site or using something on your site. Especially if you could see on another screen what it was they were doing that caused that response/reaction.

Very interesting. What are some of the companies that provide that service called Lynne?

Hi MIke

I think the average pay per test for that is about $10 but once I got $50 to do one. Each user test takes about 20 minutes. The two companies that I know of are Userlytics and User Testing.

It works sort of in the same way that online surveys work so people sign up to the website to be testers and if there is a test available you get notified to see if you qualify.

Before you can qualify to do any real tests you have to download their software to your machine, then you have to submit a quick test showing that your webcam and microphone etc work. Once this has been approved you then have to do a 20 minute sample test which than also has to be approved. After that you will get sent notifications when there are tests available. The company that offers the service do check the videos for quality before sending them to their clients.

Yes I can imagine that sitting through hours of these videos would be quite tedious, but at the same time I think it would be incredibly insightful too.

Paying someone to test my website? It sounds very interesting to hear opinions from real people about my website. Personally i've never been a tester or used those services, but just wonder Lynne.. what types of website have you tested? And how are prices calculated?

Hi Procoder.

Pay is usually $10 per test and tests take about 20 minutes to complete. I was paid $50 for one test before but that was a once off. I have no idea why that one was so well paid because it took 20 minutes too.

I've only done a few tests before, one for a museum overseas which was strange.I had to find the maps to get there, a floor plan and opening/ closing times.

The the $50 one was for a solar power company in my country. I had to figure out how to get a quote, see what different options there were for solar panels and other similar tasks.

I have heard of website tester and I was almost tempted to apply in one site before. But I know that testing a website is hard work since you have to come up with the test cases which means you need to know the architectural design of the site that includes the details of each web page.
