    How do you deal with the kids when you have freelance work to be done?

    The other day I was left alone with kids; my wife had got a little busy with some thing and any way for the most part my girls are easy to deal with as they do not cause trouble. But this one day for some reason when my wife decides to let me watch the kids lol they want to act like little crazy people. lol. But I quickly got them settled by rounding the girls up and throwing on a good movie for them they were able to relax and I was able to still get my work done, so from parent to parent what are methods you use to to maintain order, especially when you have freelance work to be done? Movies games even food lol what are your ideas ?

    Oh my gosh you beat me to it! I was going to ask a similar question.

    I have been working with my young kids on and off since they were born. My daughter stayed home with me until she was 2 years old, there was a period of time she was at a day mother. My son was with me all the time until he was 13 months old.

    For me getting into a routine and really getting to know your kids is important. You can get it right, but there are times when things go very badly wrong. Working with your kids can turn into a very frustrating thing for you and your children so that by the end of the day everyone is in tears. I have been there often.

    So yes routine works and then the children know when it is time for you to work and when you are available to play.

    It is important to give the kids a bit of attention before you try and work and then make sure when you are going to start working that they have something to keep themselves occupied.

    Since they were babies they have loved water. One thing that could get me to get quite a bit of work done was to sit outside with my laptop (far away from them lol) and give them some buckets of water and some other containers. It would keep them busy for a long time.,

    Then puzzles, painting, drawing, playdough with cookie cutters and yes on occasion a movie or tv. Try and vary things often so they don't get bored.

    Hi jkeyz2 thanks for your question. Yes it is difficult to handle everything when time to look after your little kids. As a freelancer, I never do work when my son beside me. Though, I am not working too much in home. my freelance work mostly base on my office. But, sometimes when I working in home and if my wife need to busy for family work, that time I have to look after him. And my son mostly like to watch TV and he like to play game on mobile too. So, I encourage him to engage with both.

    Getting them to watch a movie was a good idea. I often did that. If they are a bit older and they are able to play some games on a laptop, they can sit next to you and do that too. You could also give them some homework. I am making that a must during the summer months so that they get to revise a bit, and maybe some quiet reading time as well. That way you can show them that everyone is doing his or her job and they will like it as they feel responsible and busy like you.

    I made the decision early on to be a work at home mom, when my daughter was born. And it's been a good decision so far, very beneficial to the entire family.

    Gotta say though, it's a lot easier now that she's older and near teen years and into her own things, to find blocks of time for working through out the day and night, than when she was two or three years old and just constantly into everything, climbing into cabinets, up on chairs, harassing the cats. How do you deal with the kids when you have freelance work to be done?

    During those early years, I was mostly writing for sites, blogging, doing affiliate selling so it was easy enough to fit my work around her needs.

    Only later that I got into freelancing and had actual deadlines and buyers demanding my time did we experience any kind of time conflicts.

    One of the things that worked well for us when she was really little, was to buy her a computer at which she could play educational games (such as Reader Rabbit, Starfall, etc) while I was working. And, that started around the time she was 3 years old. And, even now she has her own desktop computer - a really nice one - at which she watches videos, listens to music, makes videos, plays Minecraft and Wolfquest and her other games and engages in homework and other educational pursuits. She likes the computer better than her mobile phone, considering she's been using it for almost 10 years now and only got her phone this past year. Seems to be a good choice for keeping her occupied, possibly this idea could work for other parents too. The other advantage of having a computer for my daughter is how that I can use it too, for work related reasons, if my main work computer ever goes down.

    Oh I would love to have a cat for my kids to chase, that would buy me more time LOL.

    I am planning on buying my kids those kids educational tablets soon, I have my eye on some really awesome ones. This will I hope get me a lot more working time out of my day.

    I can barely deal with my freelance work + real job without kids. Don't really want to imagine my schedule WITH kids.
    Both me and my wife are pretty young, we don't plan on having a baby anytime soon but sometimes I think about it. Maybe I'll quit my day job and be a full time freelancer again.

    I would love to be around my kid full time. Though @Beverly I would be pretty reluctant to leave my kid in front of the computer or TV as I worked in the background. Read a lot of scary stories about the negative aspects of technology on very small children.

    That was a good tactics you used up there. I don't think kids can be an issue when there are works to be done as long as you keep them busy with one thing or the other. Once they are focused on one play, you can go about your work.

    Depending on the age of the kids, you can let them watch tv or play with computer games. But for toddlers, doing work while watching them is not a good idea for you will only lose your concentration. In our place, mothers can hire an emergency nanny if they are leaving the house or will attend to a social obligation.

    I have gone through that and I'm still going through it.What I do is to leave them with an interesting cartoon not after telling them I need to work, sometimes one they need is a good food to be filled and this will send them sleeping.It all about looking out for what works and focus on it.
