How to check if your account was compromised in a data breach?

Haveibeenpwned it’s a website that allow you to check if your email account has been compromised in a data breach and leaked online.

What does mean data breach?

A "breach" is an incident where a site's data has been illegally accessed by hackers and then released publicly. Review the types of data that were compromised (email addresses, passwords, credit cards etc.) and take appropriate action, such as changing passwords.

Type your email address into that search box and then click the button “pwned?” If your account is compromised in a data breach you will see red page, otherwise a green page.

Also, they offer a great feature that notify you via email, if your account has been compromised. To use that feature, you need to subscribe to “Notify me” and type your email address, that you want to receive the future notifications.

Oh thanks Procoder this is very useful. I'll be honest here I'm scared to check LOL

What do you do if your account has been breached? Does this site help with that?

Actually that depends by type of the website which you are registered. But, first thing that you should do is to change your account details in that site.

Haveibeenpwned does not check if your account has been breached, it notify you only if the site where you are a member has been compromised in a data breach.

I just thought of something, a question if you will. Why do you have to put in your email address to know whether the site was compromised or not? How can it tell if your email address is registered on one of those sites that are on its breach list or not? It looks to me like this site is only set up to collect email addresses because I can't see how from your email address, it can know if you have/had an account on one of those sites or not. Does it attempt to login to each site using that email address and then depending on the message given back like "This email address is not associated with any account" or "We could not find an account with that email address" etc etc and then from that know if you have an account or not? How does it work? Is this a good question?

I know what you mean, but that site will search only for leaked databases online, does not check your private account, or websites that you're registered in. Let's say you are a member of "x" website ,and that "x" website got compromised, and if their database is leaked online your email account is there too. So, if you will search for your email account on haveibeenpwned,a message will appear that you are a member of "x" which has been compromised in a data breach. That's how it works.

That was very helpful procoder. I had no idea there could be this possibility to check. I really worry about safety of data especially since you get pretty much most of work stuff via email when you are a freelancer. As Lynne mentioned I am truly scared to check as if the red message comes up I am going to worry even more. I wish there was a truly good and secure way to avoid hacking and data breaches. Unfortunately it is an issue that we need to deal with when being online.

Yes, and there's nothing to be afraid, that site it's simply amazing. I've subscribed to their notifications so i don't have to check my email everyday if i have been compromised, if that would happen i'll receive automatically an email in my inbox with all details. Unfortunately we can't stop those things, but we can prevent them. How to check if your account was compromised in a data breach?
