Is physical pain a sign of emotional distress

Sometimes I am in pain in my body, especially in my back and neck. I've talked to my doctor about this situation and he can't find any cause for the pain. I've been under stress for awhile over personal life problems, sorting things out now. And, things have been very tense. I am sure it must be related to that, though I don't know why my body is in pain over it.

Do you think that you can manifest physical pain over sadness or emotional distress? Is this a common reaction?

Yes it can be. When you are stressed, you often tense up which is not good for the body. I have felt this way before many times. It is a good idea to have a way to get rid of your stress if you can find one.

If you are tensing up your neck and back muscles, that can cause pain and fatigue. You should take time to care for yourself so that you can relieve stress and feel at peace. You can do this by walking everyday or doing yoga or other stress relieving activity.

Yes, it is common in a lot of people. When I feel tired or a little sad I feel my neck so rigid and when I move my head it is very painful, and it goes away in like a week, it is very bad and my doctor say that it will happen every time that I get sad.

I don't think physical pain is connected to emotional pain. But if your doctor says other wise, then its all good. Emotional distress from what I understand, is pain that you often cannot express. Grief, sadness, overwhelming sense of hopelessness. Physical pain you can identify which part of the body hurts. If you ask me which is worse, I would say its emotional pain. It's more difficult to diagnose and treat.

My job in the office is very stressful especially when it is reporting period where the boss would review the status of our projects. When I reach home, I would be complaining often of headache but sometimes it is backpain or muscle pain. But I know the real cause is stress. What I would do in times like that is to take a hot shower, eat good food for dinner especially my comfort food and then have a massage to soothe my body and my mind. After the masssage, I automaticall go to sleep. One doctor said that physical pain caused by stress is the body's way of telling you about the problem. And it's a good manifestation because you can at least do something about it unlike if there is no signal and you are over-stressed that can even cause a stroke.

Emotional stress can contribute to physical pain especially for those that do lots of physical exercises or are involved in doing tasks that takes lots of energy off the body. I do not wish to be in situations where I will suffer emotional stress considering the type of person that I am.
