Why does my mouse stop working suddenly?

Several times today, my mouse has stopped working suddenly. I have a laser optical mouse and sometimes the red light will just go out. I don't want to have to buy a new mouse so soon.

Is it wireless then? Maybe you should replace the battery.

Did you update your mouse drivers? Or, maybe the cord to the mouse is broken, if it's not wireless.

I also have an optical mouse and when that happened to me the first time, I changed the battery and it was working again. When I bought a wireless keyboard, it has a free wireless mouse which I also installed to replace the wired optical mouse. But the wireless sometimes stops with no reason and my suspicion is the interference in the signal because it is wireless. I am not using that wireless mouse anymore.
