I don't want to get hacked or scammed or attract a Facebook stalker. Can you give me some advice for staying safe on Facebook?
Don't friend people you don't know. If someone seems a little over friendly too fast, that person is up to no good.Just back off and avoid them or report the behavior.
Yes, I agree with you. I had read in one blog that the first step that a stalker takes is to send you a friend request. Some years back, I would be accepting friends blindly no matter who they are. But now I am discerning with friend requests. When there is no mutual friends, I delete the request. When there is a mutual friend, I ask the mutual friend is the sender of the friend request to me is an okay guy. At least I have a sort of filtering new friends. That’s my rule for staying safe.
Never assume someone is your real friend (especially if you don't know them offline), even if they like all your photos or comment nicely on your updates. It's easy to fake friendships online.
Don't publish your telephone number, home town or address anywhere on Facebook, not even private messages as there are bots which can scrape all that information. Also someone can use your home town information with your full name to find your exact home address through online sources.
