Ranking high on Google for keywords even without SEO

Is it possible to rank highly on Google search without artificial backlinking campaigns (such as forum posting and blog commenting). Can you really rank higher in search engines just by posting quality blog posts and gaining the occasional backlink from a devoted fan? Will Google reward high quality even without massive backlinks?

I published an article on "Hindu Fertility symbol" in 2012. When I wrote this article, I did not know what SEO was about. However, the article appeared on the top search result for a long time. How did this article succeed? Here is my discovery
I wrote unique content (the topic was not covered extensively online)
I wrote an interesting topic (yes, fertility is really interesting subject, I get 100 visits every day in average)
I wrote original content (I did not copy from other sources)

For the on-page SEO of the website, the main elements are high quality content and quality keywords as well. I guess it is possible for a website to get a high ranking in Google and even in other search engines if it has fresh contents often that is well written, unique and relevant to the niche of the website. Add to that the keywords that are also unique and you get a high ranking position in the search engines.
