Does your position on the search results really matter?

Is it true or false that first place on Google search for a keyword is the best spot? Can you get just as much traffic from other places in search results such as second or third position?

And how it matters!
Does your position on the search results really matter?
That's a snapshot from analytics about a traffic improvement for one of my clients, using the right SEO; means ranking improvement for more than 1000 KWs from P2-3 to #1-3.
The change in traffic was within 6 months from about 400 > 50.000 visitors per month!

Your website rank on search engines really matter. Usually, when people are searching online, they never go beyond first four pages. In most cases, they only check the results on the first pages, usually the top 5 results. If your website is in the top results, people are likely to click your link. In terms of traffic, top position really matters.

By logic it is the number 1 spot on the search list that gets the most traffic from the search engines. However, it depends on the relevance of your link to the particular search. For example you own a resort that your website is all about it. When someone searches for a resort in your area then your link might be number 1. However, if the number 2 and number 3 are more descriptive and the description is more relevant to the searcher then your link will be bypassed.
