Promoting your site = Bad?

So, I recently heard that promoting your site on other sites actually can be a bad thing. So I wanted to ask, when it comes to making your site better not only in ranking & traffic but also in page rank, is promoting your link on other sites good or bad? Also, do you think google penalizes those who promote their link?

So, for those SEO Experts out there, what are your thoughts and opinions/facts on this?

I am not sure if google is going to penalize it or not but I do not think that it is a bad thing to have your link and promote it. That is how you are going to get others to your site after all

I agree, but my question I ask myself, should I have my members help me promote and promote my link or should I? Which would benefit my site more?

Most likely you will want to do both, with self promotion (such as advertising and asking others to come to your site) and also having your members recruit other forum members or recommend your blog to others.

If someone likes your site, they will most likely tell others about it, but sometimes they need a little nudge. Just ask, that will get you plenty of likes and shares.

I would say that you need to do both. Both of them will get you the exposure that you need for your site and there is nothing wrong with that

You can promote your website on others sites and rank well! You just have to make the promotion look natural! It means, don't over promote your website once, don't link on bad website and so on... Blog comments, forum posts, track backs, guess post, etc.. are great ways to build back link; as long as you don't abuse it!

If you promote your website then may be google will penalize your website but if you promote your business then google care your business and show in top search result. So now you have to decided what you want to do? Website Promotion or Business Promotion

I wonder what gave you an idea that promoting your site on another site is bad. Anyway, I am not an expert but I am one learner of SEO so I can say that you can promote your site in chosen places only. That is called quality backlink when you are able to post your site’s link on a very popular forum or blog. Take note of the adjective popular because a site that has many users will certainly give your backlink more chances of being clicked.
